A former shipmate who left the navy and has now been a missionary in Kenya for 8 years shared this perspective with me while on furlough in Nov. It's been haunting me since and seems very relevant to the "to carry or not to carry" discussion. Bare with me, I'll try to be concise...

Out in the bush near the mission station, after dark (when everyone locks up and shuts down), a boy runs into their compound shouting that the 'bandits' are robbing his home (huts joined by fences around a cattle yard). As is often the case, the village men had taken their cattle on a long sojourn to better pasture.

What to do? Leaving his wife and three children behind, my friend grabbed an axe handle and ran to the scene alone. He fell upon a group of "thugs" yelling and swinging. They were VERY surprised and took off running.

A license to posses a fire arm of any kind is hard to get in Kenya and the punishment for unlicensed possession can be severe ... i.e. summary court martial and execution ... (armed gangs and organized Muslim revolutionaries are a big problem).

He acted out of instinct to help the very people he had come to live among, serve and bare witness to. But in retrospect, he determined that the principles of "love thy neighbor" and "do unto others" REQUIRED him to respond.

He explained that he loved his wife and children and wouldn't hesitate to defend them, so how could he not rise up to defend the wife and children of his neighbor? Wasn't this the "brass tacks" of the commandment? Were they of less value?

I've enjoyed THR forum for a month now and have noted that it is often viewed "unwise" to consider defending our neighbors as we would defend ourselves. I know there are a lot of issues involved and if the bad guys don't get you the lawyers probably will. But maybe, just maybe, a generation of men who would put these principals ahead of their own comfort and security could go a long way toward making this world a better place.

Food for thought!

what you have said

is probably right, however being a missionary trying to win the hearts and minds of the locals may or may not require some different thinking than endangering yourself to protect the able bodied guy next door driving the Benzs and living in the three story home that has never giving a thought to protecting himself.
there are neighbors that i would go to the aid of, but not all, the ones that know me and would be accepting of the help, sure. others have giving the impression that any help from me would be an intrusion are most likely on their own.

No matter how independant you are or what your faith is, you should never have to go through life all on your own. Also, this world belongs to everyone else as much as it belongs to myself. We all have to live with each other if we like it or not, and that makes me think we should look out for our fellow man. If you dont have the heart to look out for a stranger, why should anyone look out for you? No matter how responsible or irresponsible we act, everyone at some point runs into a situation they cant get out of alone.

We get worried about lawyers and our own danger, but that's just part of the "it doesnt matter if it isnt happening to me" philosophy. It's that type of being passive that has allowed crooks to grow strong and good men to grow week. It'd be easier for me to make up the money on court costs than for me to forget that I left someone just like me to a criminal's mercy. I have a responsibility to come home safe to my loved ones, but so do all the people that are made victims. We're supposed to be in this together people...

All I can say is that if I saw a woman being raped, a guy being mugged or a kid being picked on, I'd intervine if possible. I treat others as I wish to be treated until given reason otherwise. I won't be wronged. I wouldn't just "walk away". That's not me. I also expect anyone who is a member of a forum called "The HIGH road", to do the same.

Part of the reason our society is deteriorating is the "it's none of my business" / "just give him your wallet" attitude.

Saw on old rerun of Unsolved Mysteries today and one the stories dealt with a young, female actress who was murdered. At the time of this crime, her neighbors awoke to sounds of screams, moans, and groans of pain coming from the young ladies house. They both got the feeling that the girl was being tortured.Did they call the cops? No, they 'didn't want to get involved'. They didn't tell anyone until they talked to the cops after the body was disoverd one week later. If I was in their possition, I would call the police then grap my shotgun and go check it out.If the situation is ok, no harm done. If the situation is a murder in progress, maybe I could make a difference. The people who 'didn't want to get involved' should be brought up on charges.Society can't function if everyone cowers in a corner afraid to get involved.

Scared neighbours

Those people should have a sign on their front doors stating here are cowards available as targets.you get the same as you do.I have been there and I have responded, thankfully no real trouble.but I just cant think of doing nothing.

I see a big difference between going to the defense of the truly defenseless and going to the defense of those who are defenseless by choice.

What about defenseless by ignorance, such as grown (or ungrown) children of blissninnies?

You dont generally have time to interview the victim while the crime is still going on to find out what kinda person they are ;)

Not flaming ya John, it's just some people were never taught that guns and knives are tools. They might be a 50th degree Kung Fu master but that dont mean much looking down a barrel...

Practical application can be a problem. If a determination can't be made, I'd say to give them the benefit of the doubt. ;)

im not certain what your getting at with the story but i think yer friend did the right thing. im not sure what religion yer buddy is but i am a christian and i live by the bible. i believe that the bible does teach us to defend ourselves, our loved ones and, and nieghbors against those who who commit evil against us. yes we are required to obey the law of the land, but morals and Gods law comes first and foremost.

You're never sure until the moment happens. Most say, "Yes, I would come to the aid" , but you're never sure until it happens. I have made both decisions, and regret not acting when I should have. I do not regret acting in the situation in which I did.

Do unto others befor they do unto you !

I would have to help someone out if they needed help and prob get sued.
Thats sad do you not think !!!!

Well, as many cops can tell you, you never know what you are going to run in to. Several years ago, my wife's cousin was on his way to work at 6:30 AM and when he got to 4th Street there was a woman on the sidewalk with a man straddling her and beating her in the face. The cousin is a well built athletic type, and he pulled the car over, jumped out, grabbed the man, pulled him off the woman, and threw him on his back. The man jumped up attacked the cousin, the woman jumped up and using her fingernails started scratching the cousin in the face, screaming "don't you hurt my husband." Luckily, an occupant of the house nearby had called the police about two minutes earlier and two big cops arrived and took the man and woman into custody. No charges were filed. So I believe that let the cops do their job, unless you have to act immediately or somebody gets killed.
