cargo pants pockets? (The pockets with the flaps on the pants legs.)

I have a pair that I wear hunting and yesterday I grabbed my P-95 as I was on my way to the deer woods. I slipped it in this pocket and tucked the flap down over it. And, it really seemed like a functional way to carry.

Does anyone else carry this way?

dang what kind of cargo pants do you wear? I don't think any of my pockets would be able to hold a P95. ;)

For work and for carry of a backup, my preferred and sadly the most common form of carry for me these days is cargo pocket carry. While pricey, I find the Orvis Zambezi cargo pants are ideal for my needs. They have upper thigh cargo pockets with a unique design of an open top pocket, middle pocket on top of it, than then a smaller pocket on top of the middle pocket. The middle pocket is the perfect size to carry a 1911 Kimber Ultra Elite with thin grips. The gun rides upright without any additional support. It just fits the pocket so nicely. It can be carried on the right or left, but the right side is usually where I carry the Kimber, the left side ends up being for a spare (Colt Pony), or spare magazine, knife, etc. if I can't wear a holstered gun.

I carry many things in my pocket as part of work. Nobody notices noises from my pockets, thunks if I hit a desk, etc. Given the size and shape, OC spray tends to print worse than a Pony or little 1911. The OC resides in a jacket or vest now. AND, I still wear vests even when I don't wear a holstered gun. Why? Because I can take off the vest and nothing is there so that when I do wear a vest with a holstered gun, nobody thinks 'gun' just because I have a vest on as often they know I don't have a holstered gun when I have taken it off in the past. Of course, it is in the cargo pants pocket, but they don't know...

I prefer a full-sized 1911, but the cargo pants just don't quite allow for it.

Ultimate cargo pocket...

While I can't carry in WI, (yet) like many of us I have stuck several of my handguns in different pockets, belts, etc. and experimented with several different styles of "carry.

The cargo pocket is a very tempting location, but I usually find several problems with it:

1. Even if the gun fits the pocket well, and won't rotate butt-down, it slaps against your thigh while walking.

2. When sitting, the weight of the gun makes the pocket want to rotate the entire pants or shorts leg down around the back of the thigh.

3. Cargo pants and shorts are all inconsistent as to the pocket hight from your dropped hand. Some ride almost as high as the watch pocket, while others are almost to you knees.

I wish I had some venture capital, and a knowledge for a business startup, and knew something about clothing production, for I see potential for a viable product.

A line of cargo shorts and pants with side cargo pockets that can be ordered with custom, or a set of predetermined measurments for the height on the leg to accomodate various arm lengths.

Various "modules" or a pallet if you will, of a square panel of Kydex or stiff ballistic nylon cut to fit the pocket that is faced with a holster customized for various pistols, and a leg tie-down strap that can pass around the wearer's thigh through slits in the inside of the pocket to prevent excess movement. The strap can be omitted for the smaller and lighter pistols like the P32 etc.

May be harder to get your gun out of in a pinch. Wear bib overalls, and use the open pockets to slip your 1911 in:evil:

Had a friend wear his when he lived in KC,( Ruger Security Six slipped inside his bib's.) Had a little gb'er pull his .25 on him one day. When he pulled his Ruger, the kid ran away:neener:

keyhole, very cool. I had done the overalls things previously but had forgotten about it.

AJ Dual, I don't have the slap problem you mention with the Orvis pants. It is more likely to occur with a smaller gun that does not occupy as much space, such as the Pony, but I can offset that by carrying other stuff in the adjoining pockets. Unlike many folks, when I wear cargo gear, I actually carry stuff in the pockets, you know, cargo.

I don't have the rotate problem either. Plus, they do make a shorts version of the same pants and they work well and don't go to my knees and the pocket isn't a watch pocket.

And yep, they are pricey. I gave up on getting air miles, got an Orvis card and get the pants for free about twice a year with accumulated points/$. You can also find them on eBay fairly often for about $40-50, even new. The 'green' pants are more of a brownish color rather than green.

The shorts cost a little less, and are about $30-40 when found on eBay...

Part of what makes the pants work is the pocket design and part is the fabric. Orvis makes a much lighter weight fabric version, called another name, and the fabric is not heavy enough to hold guns even thought the pocket design is the same.

No, I normally carry my wallet in that pocket since it has a habit of slipping out of my back pocket while driving, and if a pickpocket pulled my wallet out I wouldnt notice, not a problem with the jeans I normally wear, as one learned at the mall a few years ago (Ironicly, I was almost arrested for assault:rolleyes: ).

The weight of the wallet gets on my nerves there. I couldnt imagine carrying my 4" Kimber or Para Companion there.

WHile dry firing anround the house I have been known to stick the muzzle of a 1911 in a carhart right side tool pocket. It is almost as if it is made for it. It certainly doesn't conceal the gun but does up to the triggerguard. Then I can practice like I am ubertactical and have a thigh rig:cool:

Good Lord! 89 bucks for PANTS?
I have tired to carry in cargo pants but the weight of gun makes the pocket flop around on my skinny(yes they have been called chicken)legs.

YES $89 BUCKS! It is outrageous, hence why I don't pay it. eBay is my friend, as is the Orvis card.

If you got chicken legs, then you are a 'special needs' person. Sorry. However, that does make you a candidate for garter carry if your legs are that skinny. I suggest a blace lace and it looks classy with most types of guns. The red garters just look cheap. :D

No, I don't like the gun bouncing around. I have thought about cutting the inside of one of the pockets completely out and wearing a proper thigh holster underneath.

who me,

These pants are made by OCI and my dad found them on sale at Goody's. They are comoflauged and have really baggy legs and almost bell bottoms. I call them my "gang banger hunting pants"! They are pretty thick and fit loose enough that you can comfortably wear thermals under them.
