Does the A2 front sight interfere with a standard scope on a flat top upper?

I see a lot of flat top uppers with standard A2 front sights, but I'm wondering if a standard scope mounted on medium rings would "see over" the front sight. I'm sure someone here has experience with this.

You won't be able to see through the scope with medium rings unless you are using a riser as the medium rings are too low to use the scope. You need to use rings that are 0.9" - 1.0" tall to get the proper sight picture with a scope on the flat top. I use the Burris x-high XTR rings with a 3-9x40 scope and the front sight isn't visible through the scope.

At any magnification much over 3x the scope "looks around" the front sight base so that you'll never see it through the optic.

There's no drop at comb on an AR like there is with most other rifles. That's why the sights are so tall to start with: with your cheek tight against the stock your eye is up there with the sights. You can try using medium rings, but I seriously doubt you'll be able to get your head low enough to see through the scope. I'd strongly recommend you use extra high rings (highs at a minimum).

At most magnifications, the front sight will be blurry enough that you won't see it unless you really look for it.

Even with a non-magnified red dot, having the front sight there isn't an impediment to shooting.

What about mounting the scope on an A2 carry handle upper? Is that too high for a good cheek weld? If not, what carry handle rail is the best?

One of the guys I compete with runs a Colt clone on his carry handle and seems to do alright with it. He beat me this month... But to me the scope looks like it is mounted too high and alters his cheeck weld to a degree that I'd not be comfortable with. But he makes it work. Here is Dr. Rob in action:

There are more pics of him and his rig in the thread.

Thanks, Gus. In the past I've had great success with the standard A2 sights, but my sight isn't getting better with age. A scope gives me the opportunity to focus, and this AR is going to be used for hunting white-tail in Wisconsin.

I was able to shoot a carbine the other day that has a red dot, magnifier and the front sight post. Even without the magnifier the front sight post just blurred out and shooting was easy. With the 3x mag on I do not remember seeing it. Like Justin says the post will just blur away using most scopes.

I run a 1-4x on my rifle with a 20 inch barrel and while I do nothave a front sight on mine I can see the end of the barrel on 1x. But it does not hinder my aiming in any way.

I have a 3-9x40 on my AR that wears an A2 front sight and I can BARELY see any interference at 3x. Anything magnification above that is not visible.
