Don't know if you all have heard of it (mini-sniping / P. Capstick, a good read for airgunning.

The problem with field targets; it’s always been a money equipment Chase ever since the days of John bowket and Titian pcp’s in the early 80’s. Hunter field’s brought back some sort of average Joe and simplified / streamlined rules. The mini sniping game is a better fit for the real world. A guy a gun and a bag full of spent cases. Theoban’s founders felt the same way and was quiet vocal about it and that’s why event directors and the newly founded BASC safety council / regulating pushed to keep him and the company out of promoting and exposure. Field targets also require more event space to. Also there’s the element of the old white guy establishment to field targets specially here in America. That’s why NRL 22 and rim fire tactical games are taking off. Multi cultural and ethnic availability classes that keep the equipment race at bay unlike field targets.

No question. Once a shooting competition becomes established, it's very difficult to prevent it from becoming an equipment race. Even when it's not a formalized competition with prizes, the same kind of thing will tend to happen. Capstick's article even talked about that. The informal sport started with break barrel springers that the competitors probably already owned and then someone came in with a match air rifle that probably cost at least three times more than any of the other competitor's rifles and cleaned up. Then everyone went to the match rifles.

Even trying to make rules to try to keep the equipment field level just seems to encourage competitors to come up with creative ways to get around them.

The will to "fudge" or work around regs speaks to the competitors lack of moral or ethics. I never had to infringe on such behavior. I still win a lot not doing so. We're getting of topic. Fact is mini-sniping is far more open to everyone to do than just about any other "regulated" game. Today we have $200 range pcp's that do far better in range accuracy than the articles FWB 150's 300's at distance. Something everyone could do financially. You can't even get in the Field target world for that. And Capstick really didn't intend on it becoming a sport. Merly an activity that was developed to enhance marksmanship endeavors.

It is very difficult to weed out amateurs from professionals. Or determine the limits of the budget of the rifle. Such a problem arises everywhere, in any sport and state. Ordinary cheating.

accuracy at 10 meters the 10 meter target guns still out perform the hunting rifles for what they are designed for....
Tall, we're not talking about competition at 10m. No one is talking to that point. The article doesn't even broach that. The internet is replete with 10m target rifles vs. Hunting PCP evaluations. Yes 10m int. air rifles are great for their purpose. But in the real world outside / their shortcomings show up fast. Take a tour of the Old Yellow forum achieves from the beginning through the mid 90's. Give a call to MAC1 / Tim McMurry (if he's still alive)
