I know these types of questions get asked a lot on this board and I usually see good responses. So I thought I would try.

I am transferring from Nevada To Texas next month. I am going to mail my long guns to an Uncle but do not know what to do with my handguns. I do NOT have a CCW.

My plan is to drive them, unloaded and with no ammo, locked in cases, locked in a suitcase. If, for whatever reason, I was pulled over in Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas, would I have any issues?

Thanks in advance for the responses.

If you had to pick the safest, most gun-friendly possible multi-state trip, that'd probably be it. :)

You're going a bit "overkill" with multiple locked boxes and such, but you're going to be just fine.

I think you meant that you are going to mail the long guns to yourself at your uncle's address. Doing it otherwise would be an unlawful interstate transfer.

Good catch! It IS lawful to ship firearms to yourself in another state, care of another person, however the addressee is YOU, and that person may NOT open the box.

You could do the same with the handguns, in fact.

Of course, you certainly can transport them yourself and save a lot of cash unless space is at an extreme premium.

Ship vs mail, yes.

If one can find a UPS hub or FedEx outlet that will accept firearms for shipment (to non-FFL) in violation of their own posted tariffs.

I appreciate the feedback and responses.

Yes I understand to address it to myself and he cannot open them. I will be spending the first weekend at his farm and can pick them up.

Space is a premium and one of the reasons I am shipping them. I will also be spending a few nights in a hotel here in Vegas and probably one in Albequerque so much less of a hassle wihtout a bunch of long guns. I have a safe here in town I can put the handguns in until I leave.

I am under the impression, some of which came from this board, that FedEx and UPS can be a big hassle with handguns, but long guns are a little easier. If I can find one to ship both I probably will. I do have a couple of handguns that are worth more to me than I can ensure and I will probably keep them on me.

I believe Arizona has no laws that would present a problem. New Mexico considers your vehicle an extension of your home and you may possess in your vehicle whatever you may possess in your home. Texas ....well let's just say Texas is a free state. You can have any firearm in your vehicle as long as it is out of sight. Under a newspaper, under a blanket, in the console, whatever, all fine. No CHL required in any of these states. Sam had it right: no gun friendlier states anywhere.

Probably THE best gun friendly states to travel. Have made this trip multiple times but not while carting multiple firearms, had 2 handguns one time I believe. Any overnight stay like your anticipated Las Vegas night would be the only concern without a secure location for your handguns. One other caution would be the Border Patrol checkpoints AZ seems to have embraced with abundance ;) Those guys never seem to be in a good mood

Pack the firearms securely in the trunk and don't break any laws en-route. I don't think you would be breaking any laws in Arizona, or New Mexico by simply transporting your own firearms. If you make it to Texas, I know you're home free.

I was going to suggest the north route (I-40) instead of the south (I-10). Since you are going through ALBQ that should be the route you are going. The "border" check points on either side of El Paso are a royal PITA, you don't have to worry about them on I-40.

No problems going through Arizona (Can't speak for the others). Simplified AZ gun law is if it's not illegal under federal law, it's legal in AZ. One thing; in AZ there is a "duty to notify" if your pulled over.

Just a quick side note. If you are going to be staying at hotels at night I'd suggest that you consider bringing your handguns into the room with you. Hotel/motel parking lots are notorious for lack of security. It's not uncommon to hear of someone's U-Haul being taken while the owner slept.
