A few folks may recall my whining about my P12.45's mysery re extraction and actually general function. Well - know what? It really is worth inspecting things closely!

Dufus here had not done this but decided as a useful move to replace extractor anyways (thx to CP14.45 for the advice/suggestion) - so ordered a Wilson extractor from Brownells. Fitted it today and apart from adding a relief of coupla thou on its groove for pin stop - it all went in fine. Huge thx to 1911 Tuner for a few valuable words to help me expedite this - as it was first time for this job.

But guess what - the old extractor was creamed!! See the pic!! Now I don't think it had been this bad originally but probably went from a chip missing to this without me having checked - being internal it takes a proper look to inspect. However, with the severe FTE's I was having, youda thought I would have - no - thus the DUH!

I need a range session now but cycling five dummy rounds thru a few times, seems to give perfect extraction. We'll see how overall performance is once able to make it to range.

Not sure - Tuner or someone else might be able to say. The Wilson replacement is machined from solid.

This old one probably suffered re heat treatment - too hard and brittle where it mattered.

Well done Chris. Sometimes it is what we take for granted that rears it's ugly head to bite us in the ---!

Good shooting and be safe.

Mim?

Flip the busted extractor over and look at the butt-end of it...6 O'Clock position. If there's a rectangular indent, it's MIM. if not, it's either machined barstock or a casting. If it's a casting, there should be a parting line visible somewhere along the length of it.

To the best of my knowledge, the only company to dabble with MIM extractors was Colt...and they got weaned pretty quickly.

FWIW, an extractor doesn't need to be MIM to break the hook. I've broken 2 Wilson Bulletproof ones and a factory Les Baer one. Those are all machined from barstock. All it takes is some extractor clocking to break a hook.

Pauli - didn't take a pic of a new one but - looking at the pic - project the high point on left of hook across to right - so it all looks symmetrical - that'd be how it should look.

Johnny - thx again! :) - close inspection shows no obvious indent but no parting line either!! Appearance of outer surface makes it look cast but still not dead sure. There are marks on lower long edge (oriented as in gun) where it appears it received a light grinding to finsh to size probably. If anyone interested I can take more pics of areas on it.

Kruzr - yep - I doubt any extractor is truly bullet-proof!

Johnny - decided to take a coupla other pics. One showing surface of back end and other to show the side that had been ground off.

The latter I now see does show a parting line if you look at right hand end - so has to be casting - n'est pas?

Alea Iacta Est

The die is cast...

Yep. That's a casting. The grainy surface was also a giveaway. I thought
those things went bye-bye when Thompson Auto Ordnance went belly up. Guess some folks just never learn...

Kruz...Without ever havin' seen one of your guns...I'm gonna bet that your extractors broke for some other reason than clocking.

Ain't gonna say it though...That horse has been flogged to death more'n a few times.;)

Reminds me of a song, circa 1968...or was it '69?:scrutiny:

All lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."

Well I think the Baer one was a push feeding/timing issue. This was with one of the barrels that eventually broke a lower lug.

The Wilson's were both Stainless and both were loose in a gov't Kimber. After the second one broke (about 1100 rounds,) I took a good look and found they were both clocking. The slot in them was wider than the one in the original extractor and wider than in the blued Wilson one I had. I put the blue one in and all was fine and still is many rounds later.
