Dumb hunting regulations

Does anyone else find it strange. . .
No, I'm not.

Pick any regulation, any at all: cars, street lights, aircraft, ketchup bottles, anything, and go learn about the physics underlying the subject. Once you understand the physics, you will find that the regulations are usually useless at best, and frequently counterproductive.

They've changed things in the past few years, but in TX, it used to be illegal to hunt squirrels with an airgun, but legal to hunt mountain lions or feral hogs with one. They've recently changed the law to allow hunting squirrels with airguns that meet a certain muzzle velocity threshold.

Explain.

if you want dumb look at new york's regs.

Other than what is defined as being legal for hunting big game with a handgun (any center fire cartridge .25 cal and larger) NY hunting regulations are quite reasonable. At least we’re not restricted to plugging our shotgun magazines so only three rounds can be carried while turkey hunting, or have to have a barrel 6” or longer on a handgun to deer hunt with, those are dumb regulations.

there are many dumb rules. most are hard to find in the book or there web site.

Ok, a few examples:

Tires: The federally mandated test regiment for tires is not only incomplete (leaving us to guess about what some of the test thresholds should be) but the tests themselves do not represent the conditions the tires experience in use. Tires designed simply to pass the tests would be disastrously unsafe on the road, and tires designed to be safe on the road are actually degraded by, and more expensive because of, the features added to pass the regulatory tests.

Cars: remember the first round of CAFE standards? In a misguided effort to reduce oil use the Gubment mandated minimum fuel efficiency standards for cars. Manufactures knew (or quickly learned) that most people didn't want to drive anemic cars, so they started making Not-Cars, so they could sell vehicles people wanted. . . and the SUV was born. SUVs exist because they fell just outside a regulation, the consequences of which made vehicles undesirable and unsafe.

All cars, trucks and SUV's under 3/4 ton designation are subject to CAFE regulations.

For every stupid regulation, there was a stupid act at some point that led to the regulation. I coached HS football for 30 years and there are some rules in the book that make you scratch your head. Until you realize that at some point, someone, somewhere did something that led to the rule change. It is the same with hunting regulations.

Some are due to the fact that legislators make the laws and often don't understand the intent of what needs to be accomplished. GA has some too. There is no mag limit on rifles for hunting here. But the Feds have a 3 round limit for migratory game. Just to simplify things shotguns are limited to 3 rounds for everything. Too easy for someone to be caught duck hunting with no plug and have them claim they were hunting quail.

But it made no sense for rifle big game hunters to have unlimited mag capacity, but someone with slugs could only have 3 rounds. They changed the law, but the way it is now worded it says shotguns may have 5 rounds for big game hunting. Someone didn't realize that some guns hold 6 rounds with no plug. I know of no game warden that would write that ticket, but it is on the books.

Can you point one or two out as you now have piqued my curiosity.
the laws they have for tagging animals make it unlawful to field dress them. you are not allowed to have a loaded gun in the woods after or before sunrise. all the the crossbow rules that you can't have more them 200 pound pull the axle length is limited to. no dove hunting. can't shoot any feral hogs.

I’ve never been cited for field dressing any game and I’ve had multiple encounters with DEC officers. The first thing I’ve done is always fill out my tag before touching the deer or turkey then field dress, that should always be done first, then field dress or transport. Of course you can’t have a loaded firearm before or after legal hunting hours in the woods as that an be considered poaching. However that does not apply if hunting coyotes or raccoon which may be hunted at night. No dove or feral hog hunting I agree with you dumb, the crossbow thing too.

ny just seems to have many unwritten rules my friend got ticked last year for gutting trout in the river, no where can you find the law on that, ask dec and you will get different answers. ny likes to change laws with little to no telling the people.

I think it silly for the State to have to make a law about everything.

While the .25 acp may fit the current deer regs in some state............do they really need a law saying it shouldn't be used?

Like when Bob and Tom (radio show) had a story years ago about somebody caught screwing chickens. Some legislator made a law afterward, against screwing chickens.

As if that was needed.

Oh, folks will suddenly quit screwing chickens, because NOW there's a law against it.

IMHO, if one is shooting a .25 acp on deer they're proly screwing chickens too, and legislation isn't gonna factor very high in that person's decision making.

HP rifle reg for IN private ground deer, is 10 round max afield.
You can run a 20 round mag, but best have only 10 or less on you (rifle and person).
No need for a plug or max cap mag.
They figure folks here can count. And if they can't, are worthy of a ticket
