I'm sending my XD-40SC slide to James at XD-HS2000 for new sights and he asked if I wanted Duracoat at the same time. I said "sure if it's matte black". No problem he said.

But now I'm wondering if I made the correct choice. The slide has no worn parts and no scratches. I don't know how long it will stay like that though.

This XD-40 is a primarily a house gun, occasional concealed carry, and using it for IDPA untill I can get an XD-40 Tactical.

I imagine that the Duracoat can be removed if required, but a refinish of some kind would be in order then.

Would you get the Duracoat now, or wait until there is wear or damage that needs to be covered? As I just sent it off this morning it's not too late to change my mind.

unless its stainless I would go for the refinish providing the finish job is priced reasonably and good work.

do they parkerize then coat it? imo its best way to go for coat type finishes. get 2 finishes in one job

I personally don't refinish until I show some wear...and maybe not even then. With my XD's, I haven't had any rust issues even with a little wear. So, I probably wouldn't....unless it was free and then that's a whole 'nuther story...

For a "working" gun, a little wear is okay.

I have an XD, as do some friends of mine. After seeing finish issues firsthand, I had mine hardchromed.

Have him Duracoat your piece and don't look back.

Why refinish a black gun with a black finish if the original finish is still in good condition? Just seems like a waste of money to me. Espeically since Springfield will often refinish XD's under warranty from what I read.

Get the mileage out of the current finish first. Properly protect it with FP10 or EEZOX and you'll be surprised at how well it will hold up.

The price offer was quite reasonable, and your various responses, thoughtful as they are, still leave me undecided.

I was going with the black because I really didn't want to "pimp out" the XD40.

I'll call him tomorrow and decide while I have him on the line. Right now I'm leaning toward canceling the Duracoat. From what I read on their website it's not easy to remove if I don't like it.

Thanks for the inputs.

you would be wise to get your XD refinished eventually sooner rather than later.

try putting your XD slide and barrel into a bowl of rust remover let it soak for few minutes pull it out and whipe dry. if all your finish comes off thats because your pistol was finished with rust.

would advise you dont toss the parts in rust remover as they would need to be refinished soon as they would be in the white(bare)
