Okay, simple enough query here- I'd like to know what caliber/style of rifle should be used as protection. Not necessarily in the home, but something that would stop just about anything out in the wilderness fairly quickly. I've been thinking a 45-70 with soft-point ammunition, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? And please, keep to high-power stuff. We've got shotguns and whatnot, but I'm look specifically for a round that's fairly affordable and packs and a wallop. Thanks!

Man, you're opening a can of worms with this one.
For zombies/bears/mutant ninjas any high power pistol, or hunting rifle round will do just fine. .357 on up for lever action, 9mm (with the right ammo) on up for autoloaders....and just about anything in a hunting rifle caliber.
This subject has been hashed and rehashed on this forum on just about ever board.
Personally, I want a .357 lever action or a .45acp carbine in my stable for defensive social use, since I own handguns in both calibers. However, I would be plenty comfortable with anything that spews 7.62x39 on up.
