Hey folks,

I just purchased a new T/C Encore pistol frame for Christmas.

While at the gun shop I noticed they have stainless .308 pistol barrels on clearance for $200. The price is a decent price for this barrel, and I need to start collecting a few barrels for the Encore :p

Question is, how does this caliber shoot from a pistol barrel? How is the recoil? Accuracy?

Any pros or cons regarding a .308 Encore pistol barrel?

thanks!

Duck911,

I paid about $230 for my Blued 15" .308 barrel. The stainless is probably $250.
Hornady's 130 SSP (single shot pistol) bullets are great. It will hold 1 1/2" groups
at 200 yards. Thats as far as I've shot it so far. Toped with a 3-12 Burris handgun
scope, it makes a great hunting pistol. Also have a .454 barrel with the same
scope. Using a 300g Nosler Handgun Partition bullet. Took a 3pt. Whitatail at
about 60 yards this year. Same price for the .454 barrel at Gander Mountain.

.454 Casull
300g Nosler HG Partion
29.0g of H110
Win Sm. Rifle primer

.308 in
130g Hornady SSP Interlock
44.0g of H4895
Win Lg. Rifle primer

Hope this helps :D Merry Christmas

Thanks mikewsc!

Sounds like the accuracy is up to par!

How is the recoil with the Hornady SSP loads?

I don't reload but I am looking to start. The other 2 pistol barrels I am considering are the S&W 460 (so I can also shoot the 454 Casull and the 45 LC) and and a .204 to compliment my Remington 700 VLS in .204.

So, I figure a .460, .204, and .308 pistol barrel would be a nice start. Along with a .223, .243, and 300 Win Mag rifle barrel, I have most of North America covered.

Thanks,

Ahhhh the recoil!

Duck,

The recoil on the .308 is um..... a bit stiff. I don't mind it  but the guys
at my club think I'm a bit screwy. I had the wood grips but now have the syn
grips. Also shot one of the guys .45-70 Encore form the club, wow what a
tack driver!!! It put quarter size groups (3 shot) at 100 yards :what: ! I was
really impressed. It did leave a lot of powder residue in the 12" barrel.

I'm lookin' to add a .444 barrel (have the S&W 460 revolver) for deer. The 460/.454/.45LC
is really a great idea. Sight the 460 load for 200 yards, then see where the .454
and .45LC hit for shorter range hunting.
All the rest are excellent calibers to have.
Hows your .204? Been thinkin' that it might be a hoot in a pistol barrel.

Have the .30-06 rifle barrel , run a 150g Hornady SST and its a darlin' . The
.45 cal muzzleloader barrel rounds out the set.

Get a reloader! A single stage Rockchucker isn't to expensive and you'll really
have a lot of fun, plus save in the long run.

My .204 is in a rifle patform (Remington 700 VLS). After the bipod, sling and Bushnell 3200 Elite 7-21x40 scope, it weighs in at nearly 13 lbs.

So, shooting the .204 out of that gun is like shooting a BB gun with 10 pumps :D

The .204 burns less powder than a .223 or 22-250, and so right off the bat the recoil is less, muzzle flip is less, and muzzle blast is less. I'm sure there will be some velocity lost to the pistol barrel, but with a 3-12 power Burris handgun scope I can see the .204 easily holding MOA out to 300 yards if I can do my part.

Thanks for the advise on the .308. Although I am not exactly recoi shy, I also don't anticipate hunting much with a handgun for big game (varmints, yes. Big game, probably not). So the cost and punishment at the range would probably be the downfall of the .308 barrel for me.

Was talking to the guys at work about the .204 and one of them really wants
one but doesn't care for the ruger. Was happy to tell him about your Rem.

As to big game hunting with a handgun, I've only taken Whitetails with them. Plan
on taking my son on a boar hunt this spring. I'm gonna use the S&W 500 or
the 460/.454 casull. I like the ease of carry, and its a bit more of a challange
than a shotgun.

You could load the .308 a bit lighter and mag-na-port the barrel, should be a lot
better to hold on the bench.

Best ............ Mike
