That is not the first time......

I have seen our government compared to Nazi Germany and Hitler. Sad really to think that some day our country will be a freedom less tyranny. It's only a matter of time.

I'm in Michigan and I wrote my representative, Thaddeus McCotter. I would share the email I sent, but I didn't save a copy of it. I do remember urging my Rep to oppose HR 1022 on grounds that it is a violation of the Second Amendment. The response is as follows:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear (Declaration Day),

Thank you for informing me of your opposition to the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection act (H.R. 1022). Your thoughts on this important matter are most welcome and appreciated.

I agree with you.

As you know, on September 13, 1994, Congress placed a 10 year ban on the possession, transfer, or further domestic manufacture of semiautomatic assault weapons (SAWs). Since this ban expired on September 13, 2004, multiple attempts have been made in both the 108th and 109th sessions of Congress to extend or permanently impose the ban. Opponents of doing so, including myself, believe responsible gun owners must not be punished for the wrongdoing of criminals; thus, Congress needs to stop targeting hunters, responsible gun owners, and gun manufacturers, and focus on the real problem: repeat offenders illegally obtaining firearms.

Nevertheless, Representative Carolyn McCarthy (NY) introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022) on February 13, 2007. If enacted, this legislation would reinstate for ten years the expired prohibitions regarding assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices. Furthermore, H.R. 1022 would also prohibit the transfer of semiautomatic weapons, except through a licensed dealer or a State or local law enforcement agency. Presently, H.R. 1022 awaits in the House Judiciary Committee.

In the mean time, rest assured, your opposition to the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022) will be kept firmly in mind during the 110th Congress. Again, thank you for contacting me; and for all you do for our community and our country. Should you have any further comment or question on this or any other issue, please contact me at the Livonia District or Washington, D.C. office.

I work for you.

Sincerely,

Thaddeus McCotter
Member of Congress

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

FWIW, both my name and my Rep's signature were written with a pen, though I can't verify if Mr. McCotter was the one who signed it.

I intend to visit the Livonia District office, as he has invited me to do, this week.

Criminals are always going to get guns, but when the victims start fighting back you see a drastic change in behavior.

Why is all that so hard to comprehend?

Because some folks are seemingly congenitally unable to deal with what human beings actually are, compared to how they wish they would be.

"a crime is committed with an assault rifle every 48 hours in the State of Maryland"

Gee, that's funny. According to the Dept. of Justice, "assault rifles", are used in less than 2% of crimes involving guns. Rifles, period, only account for 2.6%.

Doesn't anyone in the Senate know enough about this issue, to stand up, right then and there, and call these people on their lies?

:barf:

mike101 -

It's even worse. There hasn't been a crime commited with a true, legally held assault rifle in over 50 years. The police officer who murdered the informant did it with a SMG.

A 'Assault rifle' is a select fire device.

'Assault weapons' make up less than 2% of gun crime, especially if you exclude stuff like 'felon in possession', where there's no usage of the firearm.

Right. When I say "assault weapon", I am going by the antis definition of the term. To them, a real assault rifle is a "machine gun".

gee if i run for congress will ya all vote for me? i'll gladly stand up and tell Levin (and most of the others) where to shove his "facts" and other BS... i wouldn't be a very "popular" person on the hill... entirely too conservative and tweaked these days.... :cuss:

Of course what has Mr Levin done about all of the well paid manfacturing jobs leaving his state. As far as Philidelphia is concerned , They have had gun control for how long now?
It is simple as this Mr. Levin:
POVERTY+ UNEMPLOYMENT + ILLITERACY = CRIME. What have you and your lackies done about this but pay lip service to it?
By the way, How many of these crimes were comitted by Illegal aliens?

A Letter to my Senators

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am sure you are aware that a new ban on nearly all semi-automatic rifles is moving through the House Judiciary Committee and there has already been some discussion on this issue on the Senate floor. I therefore want to direct your attention to the FBI statistics for murder by weapon type for 2005.

Total murders: 14,860
Handguns: 7,543 (51%)
Rifles: 442 (3%)
Shotguns: 517 (3%)
Unknown Firearm: 1,598 (11%)
Knives: 1,914 (13%)
Other Weapon: 1954 (13%)
Bare Hands: 892 (6%)

These are the real numbers and they show that twice as many people are beaten to death with bare hands and feet than are shot with rifles. Almost twice as many people are stabbed as are shot with rifles and shotguns combined. Where is the epidemic of rifle violence?

Here is a quote from Senator Carl Levin's comments on the Senate floor on March 9, 2007"

"Just a short trip south of Pennsylvania lies another example of the how guns are affecting our communities. According to the nonprofit organization Ceasefire Maryland, a crime is committed with an assault rifle every 48 hours in the State of Maryland. The Maryland State Legislature is attempting to address this horrifying statistic by considering a bill backed by Governor Martin O'Malley that would ban 45 different assault weapons statewide. This action could serve as an excellent example of a legislature taking a commonsense approach to reducing gun violence. Congress and President Bush have allowed the Federal assault weapons ban to expire."

This entire commentary is a bald faced lie. The only people this gun ban will effect are honest, law-abiding Americans who use semi-automatic rifles for hunting, target shooting and legitimate defense of their homes. Please do not deny your constituents their Constitutional rights in an attempt to solve a problem that does not exist.

Sincerely,

Scott Curtis
Excellent research and great post. I may use most of this to send my reps too.

His "common sense" just boggles my mind:

The American people have a right to demand that their schools, places of worship, and other public places be better protected from gun violence.

Umm... schools and places of worship are ALREADY "gun free zones" in MI, at least (except if the priest/minister gives you specific permission to CCW there). :banghead:

Almost 5.9 million people were victims of gun violence between 1996 and 2005.

Umm... this was DURING THE AWB (except 2005)! What?! You mean people still got shot despite the AWB? But didn't he also say how horrible it was that they let the AWB expire? :barf: :banghead: Sounds like he's indirectly making an argument at how ineffective a new AWB would be.

According to the nonprofit organization Ceasefire Maryland, a crime is committed with an assault rifle every 48 hours in the State of Maryland.
According to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, gun crime rose 49.4 percent nationally between 2004 and 2005.

These statistics are from EXTREMELY biased sources and directly conflict with objective FBI & other crime statistics (i.e. they are bold faced lies).

More fun from the #$%#$%'s own website:

In a speech to the Economic Club of Detroit in May 1999, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., committed to speak on the issue of gun crimes each week that the Senate is in session. This is the 256th week he has continued to live up to his pledge; his remarks follow:

I am SO sick of all these people making things a gun ownership issue.

Yes... there IS an epidemic.

It is an epidemic of Violence. Violence. Period.

Instead of wracking their brains to figure out how they can systematically pervent people from being ABLE to do violence at all, why not take a good look at the fact that there is an abundance of people DESIRING to do violence.

This isn't a problem with guns. It is a problem with society. In a world where everyone is taught that they are somehow more "special" than others (we wouldn't want to crush Jr.'s self-esteem) and that they are somehow entitled to things, we have created a populace of self-aborbed people who can't develop a moral framework outside of thier wants and needs. Couple that with the casual attitude displayed in media about killing, and you only begin to see the problems we face.

Instead of looking at society, they would rather us be helpless to do anything about the violence around us.
