I'm starting to prefer shotgun slugs. Most of my deer hunting is done in thickly wooded terrain where shots will be close and blood trails tough to find. To me, it makes sense to have fast handling gun that will poke huge holes in deer.

Now that I cast and load my own, I can make slug rounds for less money than centerfire rifle rounds.

There's really nothing wrong with that way of thinking, depending on what works best for your way of hunting. I've killed two Deer in my life with a shotgun on out of state "shotgun only" hunts. It's a formidable versatile weapon used within its limitations. If I were to have to choose a survival weapon, (firearm), my first choice would be a shotgun.
