i shot a paintball co2 tank (they're aluminum, btw, not steel (holy crap would that be heavy)) with a 223 and 220swift. both poke nice holes in them, pressurized or not.
I shot a small torch sized propane tank with a deer slug once. In retrospect, it was a pretty good shot with a sightless 12 ga. from the 75 yards or so away we figured we'd be safe.
It went "poof" and make a big cloud of rapidly dissipating propane vapor. Didn't throw any shrapnel, the tank stayed in one piece and didn't even go very far. You figure you whack something with a 1 ounce chunk of lead going over a thousand FPS and it'll at least fly, but apparently not. Just made a big hole through it and let all the pressure out.
I shot a full torch-sized propane tank like the poster above, but the differance was that I had taped a lit road flare to the side of the tank before shooting it. I didn't want to trust that a spark from the actual impact would ignite the gas. I shot the tank with my SLR-95 from about 75 feet away. Big ball of fire that spread out about 15-20 feet in each direction. I have a picture we took somewhere in my files that shows the fireball right at its apex, if I can find it I will post it. It was NOT a movie-type explosion, but we could feel the heat on our faces and there was a WOOF! noise when it went up. Just for the safety folks, this stunt was performed in a rock quarry with nothing flammable around. We also policed up our area when we were finished. If I ever do it again(not likely!), I would like to try a full 5-gallon tank this time but I would be MUCH farther back .
Just about any .22LR rifle will put a slug through a fresh C02 12gr cylinder, causing it to explode with impressive force.
When I was a kid, a buddy put a CO2 cylinder in a Pepsi can (without my knowledge) and informed me I couldn't hit it from where I was standing with my Marlin M60 and Remington Golden bullets. Hell, I was only 20 or so feet away, so I let one loose. Talk about startled... it sounded like I had fired both barrels of a double-barrel 12gauge and the pepsi can simply disappeared. Neat stunt I suppose, but not the safest prank in the world to pull on a friend.
That's a large Ka-Boom. It would be my luck to have been a half mile behind the explosion with my exit coming up in 3/4 of a mile and I needed to pee really, really bad.
I use a 100 lb propane tank to fire my bluing tanks. When I first picked it up from the store and we loaded it on it's side in the back of my truck, the guys that filled it asked me if I was going directly to my shop to unload it. When I asked them why they wanted to know, they told me about a gentleman that loaded the same size tank in his trunk and deciced to go shopping before heading home. While parked in the lot at a grocery store,in our lovely 100+ degree heat, the pressure built to the failure point and the resulting explosion took out six cars that were parked around his.
The pressure relief valve does not work with the tank on it's side. It's made to vent gas, not liquid.
I can't vouch for the veracity of this story but, I did haul my butt straight home and unloaded that tank!
And, I've never even thought abot shooting it.
