Hello
I hope I am posting this in the proper place. if not, please direct me and I will repost.
I recently purchased some 200gr plated round nose bullets from Everglades Ammo. Do any of you guys have any experience with these? I have never loaded a plated bullet but have read to load for cast. My Lyman has 200gr jhp and 200 cast, there’s not that much of a difference between the 2 for Bullseye. What do you guys recommend ? I have called Alliant and Everglades and neither will comment on load data for each other. I should be fine loading per the cast data right? Thinking somewhere around 4.7gr of Bullseye and 5.0gr of HP-38.
As stated above, I am working with HP-38 and Bullseye powders, Fed 150 large pistol.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Looking at an old Midway USA 45 ACP load manual, plated 200 gr starts at 4.0 gr to 4.4 gr Bullseye, and 4.4 gr to 4.8 gr HP-38. Max loads shouldn’t exceed 5.6 gr Bullseye and 6.0 gr HP-38. I’ve never shot 200 gr plated RN, but I have shot plenty of Berry’s 230 gr CPRN with HP-38 over 4.8gr to 5.4gr HP-38, as well as several other powders. I load them between cast and jacketed...and have never run into any problems. Berry’s website says to go with cast loads...but I treat them closer to jacketed than to cast, while being neither.

I wouldn’t expect you to have any problems with your planned loads...but I would still start lower and work up.

and 5.0gr of HP-38.
That is a pretty common charge for W-231/HP-38 (Same powder) and .45 ACP. Start at 4.7 and work up in .1 increments. I shot a lot of 200 to 230 Gr bullets in .45 ACP with 5.0 Grs of W-231.

Old Midway Load Map with a plated 230 Gr. I would stay in the green.

Thank you for the info. That’s kinda what I was looking at (the in between) but Just wanted to hear from some folks with more experience. I appreciate the info.

Thanks again

+1.

I have shot Berry's, Power Bond, RMR and X-Treme 200 gr RN plated bullets and found depending on OAL used, 4.8-5.0 gr W231/HP-38 would blow some unburnt powder granules and increasing the powder charge to 5.2-5.3 gr addressed the issue and improved accuracy.

As Walkalong posted, you can safely use load data for slightly heavier weight bullet and I have used lead load data for plated bullets with good results. While Hodgdon doesn't list load data for 200 gr RN, they do have load data for 230 gr Lead RN, which you could reference for 200 gr RN plated bullet - http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol

230 GR. Lead RN W231/HP-38 COL 1.200" Start 4.3 gr (699 fps) 12,200 CUP - Max 5.3 gr (834 fps) 16,900 CUP

Welcome to the forum.

As you read, you can use cast bullet data or mid-level jacketed bullet data with plated bullets. You already got good advice above, load them up and shoot them lol.

Man, thanks a lot! Great info. I appreciate your patience and willingness to share you experience as I am sure you guys have been over this many times before.
Thanks again
