Exceeding Max OAL for a cartridge

I am reloading some 7mm-08. The Lee Collet Die information states the Max. overall length as 2.800 inches, but when you look at the _Minimum_ OAL, included with their die instructions, for their 162 gr. jacketed bullet it says 2.875 inches. I have also noticed that the data hogdon publishes on their site for loading 162 gr A-max with IMR 4895, they list the COL as 2.875 inches. I assume this OAL length beyond the max takes into the plastic tip on the A-max but I thought I would just check to see if anyone has encountered this before.

2.800 is generally for reliable function in the magazine. You did not state what rifle you are loading for but depending on the type you might get away with a little extra length. I load 7mm-08 and seat my bullets pretty long; long enough to drop pressure/velocity about 100fps below published data. Not sure of the OAL as I measure from the ogive, but I single load at the bench anyway. Some bullets must be seated longer so the ogive of the bullet is not in the neck.

Every rifle will be different. Some may or may not be able to handle the increase in OAL while some may need much shorter. Oh, and don't forget that different bullets can also make a difference in OAL

The 2.80 inches is the SAAMI max for ammunition manufactures, so all factory ammo will fit all factory chambers. It has nothing to do with the handloader.
