The following link goes to a page set up by the RKBA sub-group of the Daily Kos, a staunchly liberal/progressive online community. Although I am not a member, poster there, or affiliated in any way, I find it encouraging that there are people across the political spectrum who support the RKBA, and I find these talking points to be well thought out and non-confrontational:

I don't think reciting a bunch of talking points is the way to advance the RKBA.

I think what the average gun owner or concealed carrier can do is to know exactly why they carry or own guns and be able to articulate that to those that want to know or just wear it on their sleave.

For example, I was pickpocketed in Prague. Afterwards I never felt more vulnerable in my life.

Purchasing a handgun was a way for me to reclaim that feeling of safety and security that most people have every day.

I don't think reciting things is the way to go either. But from what I have read here and experienced personally, members may have any number of anti-RKBA points brought up to them, and it's nice to have reasonable responses. For example, someone I know was upset that Ohio recently narrowed their CCW restrictions; it's helpful to be able to articulate with facts and figures the dramatically lessened likelihood that a CCW holder will act in an illegal fashion.

Thanks for the link. I've posted it to a friend's wall on Facebook, an otherwise reasonable and thoughtful individual, leftist in his politics, who has recently started posting links from the Brady website. I hope to provoke some discussion with these.

I used to subscribe to Daily Kos... not because I believed everything said there, but because I've been humbled enough to know that a smart person I disagree with can often teach me a thing or two.

But I agree about the concept of explaining gun ownership in personal terms. I own guns for a few reasons. I own them because I can't imagine not owning them (because that's kind of how it is in rural PA). I own them because I enjoy recreational shooting. I own them because I'm a student of history and I know that a group of people that have been disarmed are such an easy target that eventually, someone is going to attack them.
But mostly, I own guns because there is real evil in the world, perpetrated by human beings against others, and I need a way to oppose it. The thought of being helpless before that evil scares the hell out of me. That's the primary reason I am such a strong supporter of responsible gun ownership.

"Gun nuts don’t want there to be any regulations on firearms whatsoever – they want everybody to own a gun!"

Simply untrue. No one seriously advocates no firearm regulations whatsoever, not even the NRA.

They obviously didn't poll me.
