Does this make sense.
BAKERSFIELD, California (AP) -- A military shell given to a group of children by a neighbor exploded while they played with it, killing two children and injuring five others, police and witnesses said.

Police were investigating the cause of Tuesday's explosion, which damaged homes and forced neighbors to wrap bloodied and dazed children in blankets.

"As you can imagine, this was a traumatic experience for the kids and their parents," said Bakersfield Police Detective Greg Terry. "So it's going to take a while to sort things out,"

Andrew Etcheverry, 8, died at the scene, and Jeni Marie Klawitter, 7, died at the Kern Medical Center, the county coroner said.

The victims, the oldest 12 years old, suffered minor to moderate injuries. Police had initially reported that six children were injured but determined that a girl thought to be hurt was not at the scene when it exploded.

Frank Sendejo, who lives near the apartment complex where the explosion occurred, said Wednesday he had given a group of children a 40 mm shell. Police said they have talked with Sendejo.

Sendejo told The Bakersfield Californian that he thought the shell was spent and often used it as a "conversation piece." He said the firing pin and bottom shell casing had been removed, along with the gun powder inside.

"I thought it was harmless," he told the newspaper.

I guess it was an explosive round being that there wasn't a casing or gunpowder. I have never seen a round with a firing pin. is it me or is the writer or owner misusing that term? Could he have mistake a round for a grenade. I just don't see how anyone could. It is a shame what happened to those kids.
If this has been posted all ready please feel free to remove it.

If the shell was 40mm, it sounds like a "Bloop gun" round from a 40mm grenade launcher.

If that's the case, then the reporter is a bit off. The "firing pin" is likely the cap and primer in the shell casing itself. The live round, even minus the means to propel it onto a target should have never been used as a "conversation piece," let alone given to the neighborhood kids to play with.

It's really a shame, I've always been a proponent of stupidity being painful for the ones who are stupid....to bad it doesn't always work out that way.

Unless they are detonated by electrical or pyrotechnic means, the fuzes for all HE rounds have firing pins, although they can also be referred to as "strikers."

When I was at Ft. Benning in the summer of '80 for IOBC, you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing 2-3 PSAs an hour telling you to stay out of the impact areas and to not pick up unexploded ordnance.

Of course there were at least 3-4 fatalities from dummies entering [or allowing their kids to enter] the impact areas and picking up unexploded ordnance while I was there...

That says it all!

Truly sad... :(

I'm sure they mean 'primer' in lieu of firing pin.

The M203 40mm grenade fuze is armed by spin & set back action. 15m minimum range in order to arm and then it's impact detonated. Once armed it's VERY sensitive.

The 40mm bofors (anti-aircraft) gun ammo had a proximity fuze (with impact backup). As the round was fired the shock broke an electrolye ampule. The spin of the projectile spread the solution and activated a battery which powered the radar emitter. Once activated, a strong enough return signal (or impact) would detonate the round.

Depending on where the kids are in relation to the shell, it wouldn't surprise me. Getting behind a tree might make a difference. What's the blast radius for a 40mm grenade?
