Face to Face transfers

Most dealers I've seen won't give a bill of sale unless you ask. So if Joe Blow tries it on me, buying or selling, I'm walking.

I don't think I have ever purchased a firearm from a dealer who did not provide a bill of sale unless it is a personal gun. Guess you won't be buying any firearms from me. If a buyer refuses a bill of sale or to provide ID, there is no way I would sell a firearm to them. The buyer is hiding something. In my case, I would suspect they are out of state.

I agree on the ID. Both parties should look at each other's DL and LTCH for some mutual CYA. But the only time I sign a bill of sale is if it is a charge sale on open account.

If you were to buy and sell a gun privately, if the gun shows up stolen the police will back track every sale of the gun that occurred. Starting with the last person that bought it and work backwards.

I have had this happen when I bought a gun and transferred through an FFL. It showed up as stolen in 1987 in Cook County, IL.

In free states that could and should be impossible to do if the gun was ever sold privately. Since free states don't require paper trails/background checks/etc. for private sales of firearms, a perfectly proper and legal response to the question "who did you get the gun from/who did you sell the gun to" would be, "I don't remember. The guy answered an ad I placed, he showed me a driver's license from my state of residence and I had no reason to believe or suspect that he was a prohibited person, so he gave me the money and I gave him the gun."

Looks like the novice buyer is being cautious, which is good.

Go with your gut. Other good signs is whether it comes with the box and mags and manual or just one mag (warning sign as to being stolen); look at his DL to ensure he is a resident and a voter (some DLs list 'voter' which felons cannot do). If you are really worried, suggest the transfer in a police department parking lot or suggest completing a bill of sale. If he baulks you may wanna walk if you are worried that it's hot or he's not legit.

Good price - $400-$450.

Fair price - $500ish.

Bad price - over $550.

If someone wouldn't sell to me/buy from me because I didn't possess a CCW, it wouldn't bother me - because I would never pursue a transaction with such a presumptuous person.

Edit to Add - While I know that such a person would simply be erring on the side of caution, refusing to deal with a legal gun owner who simply chooses not to CCW, or one that it too young to CCW, is denying/refusing that person's right to keep and bear arms based simply upon preference, and therefor I wouldn't buy/sell so much as a stripper clip from/to such a person.
