Does any one know who else makes and where to get some 38 super factory defense rounds for my carry gun. Cor-bon is the only one I know but I would like to try others.

PMC makes a 115 grain JHP, but I think it is loaded on the light side and makes 9mm velocity. The Winchester 125 grain Silvertip hollow point is a good load and is comparable to a 9mm 124 grain +P+ load. It is unfortunate that the 38 Super has been overshadowed by the 9mm +P+ and 40 S&W.

Cor-Bon make some pretty hot loads in this caliber. The info. below is from their Web site, and the prices are their retail prices, excluding shipping, if you want to order direct from them. Looks like almost a duplicate of .357 Magnum ballistics - nice! :D

38 SUPER +P - 115gr JHP - 1450fps/537ftlbs - 20 rds/box - $13.09

38 SUPER +P - 125gr JHP - 1350fps/506ftlbs - 20 rds/box - $13.09

I bought a 38 Super Commander a while back and have put 100 rounds of Silvertips through it along with 50 rounds of CorBon 115 +Ps and 200 rounds of CorBon 125 +Ps. The 125s are 100 fps slower than the 125 Gr 357 Magnums. That's pretty close. I'd sure hate to be on the receiving end of either of those CorBons. I've carried it a few times. I feel confident enough in them to bet my life on.

Do the hotter commercial loads necessitate a ramped barrel?

I don't think any of the commercial loads would pose a problem for the standard barrel. The ramped barrel with fully supported chamber stemmed from IPSC shooters pushing the 38 Super to levels far beyond anything the factories would be willing load.
