What a beautiful season, fall. Crisp air, beautiful colors and the cacophonous chorus of coyotes in the morning twilight! Autumn 'yote hunting has always been my most successful and enjoyable time to call in dogs. Out of 10 stands, I called in 8 dogs and most of them got so close to me I couldn't get a shot on them, no sense of caution at all. And those pelts!

Anybody else doing any fall coyote hunting?

Yep. Had to google that word. Always thought of myself as having a pretty decent vocabulary. Not upper echelon like a lawyer or professor. But I'm told I'm well spoken. I have since been forced to reconsider the possibility of needing to delve further into my thesaurus for more sesquipedalian synonyms. I tink wunna dem der pelts tis in need uva good sewin lady.

Haven't had the opportunity to chase yotes yet this year. But we've got probably 10-15 different dens that sound off every evening. And when school is over, my deer tags are full, and the ducks and geese head back north, I'll be making plans to pay ole Wiley a visit or two.

I've never tried coyote calling. I've seen them in the area but I've not heard them. A co-worker has a good recording of them behind her house and her friend took a photo of one twenty feet off her front porch. They want me to give it a go...just cannot seem to put the time to it yet.

I've got a good load for the hunt and I'm ok out to 200 yds. Not likely to get that distance here. I'm going to force myself to try this. Sounds like a good hunt day.

They still haven't primed up yet, but they're still getting hunted around here, came across one Sunday morning horseback on my way to round up a herd, passed within 70 yds of him and he just watched me the whole time, all I had was bullwhip and a rope and 30 min to get the cows home, so he lived to tell another story that day, but when the temperature drops I've got a double reed jackrabbit in distress waiting for him! Pretty white one at that.

Ever since our chickens could live outside the brooder Coyotes seem more common here...

Haven't got out since my son 'borrowed" my Quiver Critter....but he's been doing some damage to the local 'yote population. I did get one on opening of deer season last fall.......

My son, behind me, got the doe.

Since most of my shots are within 150 yards, I've been thinking about loading some pistol powder in the 308 or maybe even the barnes Frangible/limited penatration rounds. The 308 doesn't make huge holes as long as I can avoid bone but sometimes I hit the spine on exit, as you can see on the third yote. He was quartering toward me on the shot.

I don't case skin my kills but I do sell them to a guy who pays me 15 bucks per dog, provided they aren't too mangled. It usually pays for my gas and requisite barley sodas.

Those dogs met their end via Remington 700 chambered in .308 Win, pushing a 165 grain SST. It's certainly overkill but it's the rifle I enjoy the most so I use it on everything from prairie-dogs to elk.

I did the opposite of you, Orcon. I got a .223 for coyote, and ended up deer hunting with it.........and still getting a coyote. o_O
