"Family photo-op* for knives?

Thanks Todd. I've enjoyed custom knives as a collector from '89. Curiosity got me into making them for about 10 years. I finished off the carbon fiber handled folders in late '17 and few strays of uncompleted pieces the past year. I enjoy making them from a hobbyist side when the urge strikes.

They have an elegance that few makers bother to even try at. I should imagine even a blind man would love them for their *feel*.

Todd.

No question but that that is the most beautiful SAK I have ever seen. If you're gonna have *one*.... That looks to be it.

Do you use Gerstners for your knife collection too? I use one for knives and another for my *N* & *Z* scale trains.

Todd.

That is also my "one and only" Gerstner toolbox. I do have a few knives in it, but I use it as my memory box. Still have a few tools in it, but mostly Precious Memories. Bought it new in 1965 when I got into machining.

The Circle is now complete! Where once you were the knife collector, you now have made collectible knives!

Your knife making skills are superb! I especially like the clean lines and graceful styling of your folders!

My Bauchop family picture;
The top Alley Cat is a fierce and wicked knife IMHO equal to the MD 8" fighters They were made during the Rhodesian unpleasantries for war fare
the middle is a Shaman and my most prized folder . It was made by Robert Bauchop, Peter's son . I found it fits in the Alley cat sheath utility pocket . This one was featured on a Magazine cover
The Bottom is a very rare "Utilicat" and is made of 1/8" stock and double edge kinda Persian profile I traded a beautiful Nickle plated S&W Model 15 for it !

Todd, I couldn't help but notice you've held on to the leather sheaths pictured in your o.p. Gordon's showing some leather too.

I had, for quite a while, gotten into the habit of ordering Kydex sheaths for knives that didn't come with them, but lately I've gotten out all the leather and have been enjoying the old-school look (and smell) of good leather.

Really not much new under the sun as far as knife design, but it's always good to see pics of purpose-built knives and how different makers add their own touches.

And we need RA40 to come along more often with his splendid photos of his dazzling work (post #19 shows why).

Parrish had such beautiful sheaths for his knives it always seemed a shame to not take advantage of them.

As far as a Service knife in the Army, I always found kydex & polymers to be noisy and soul-less and I completely LOATHED velcro and also little tolerated plastic snap-clips.

Thank you! The makers we had come to know knew I was hands on so they encouraged me on. I did some of the kit stuff and that progressed. Was an enjoyable time of exploration and the challenges in problem solving.

I know, personally, makers who have been successfully making and selling knives for decades without 25% of the art in yours.

Todd.

Wow what a great thread this is! There's history and art intertwined everywhere you look. Thanks to all the serious collectors and makers for showing us.

The Utility Cat I have is an older one here is a newer one featured in a Blade magazine. MD owes me an "Amazing Grace" which was a 6" 1/8" stock Bear Cat . I think he only made one for his daughter Grace. , it truly is Amazing but his 1/8" stock wasn't very successful in heat treat or grinding for him so he never got me one. I gave up until I met a collector who had my Utility Cat by Bauchop and didn't really want to sell it as he nor I never saw another (all though the Alley Cat is one of the most common Bauchops) . He coveted my 4" S&W M15 in bright nickel with stag grips . so in the heat of horse trading we traded ! I t has a black leather sheath as it is not a combat blade . The Utilicat replaced my need for an Amazing Grace as Bauchop was able to get a successful double edged 6" blade with 1/8" stock and mine is a heavy duty slicer with the sexy Persian lines :) this picture is the only other one i've seen and has colored Micarta handes and a later Kydex sheath it does not have a Kalguard coated blade like a lot of Peter's earlier and all mine have. Mad Dog has his chrome and Bauchop his Kalguard, the chrome is tougher and MDs sell for about 2-3 times as much as Bauchops currently.
