Me and my uncle went ridin' down, south Colorado, west Texas bound
We stopped over in Santa Fe, That bein' the point just about half way,
And you know it was the hottest part of the day. I took the horses up to the stall,
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all. Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt,
It bein' summer, I took off my shirt, And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.

Wild Texas cowboys, they's all around, With liquor and money, they loaded down.
So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame; You know my uncle, he starts playing a game-- High-low jack and the winner take the hand.
My uncle starts winnin'; cowboys got sore. One of them called him, and then two more,
Accused him of cheatin'; "oh no, it couldn't be. I know my uncle, he's as honest as me",
And I'm as honest as a Denver man can be. One of them cowboys, he starts to draw,
And I shot him down, Lord, he never saw. Well I grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw,
Shot me another, oh damn he won't grow old. In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold,
And we high-tailed it down to Mexico.

Now, I love those cowboys, I love their gold, I loved my uncle, God rest his soul,
Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know,
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold,
And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

Me And My Uncle, The Grateful Dead

410 - Rod Picott
I got a .410 on the back seat of a Firebird
It’s a ‘76
We all got laid off
From the tire plant down in Nashville
A few months back

They told me down at Unemployment
“Things have changed – you’re on your own now, boy.
You’ve got to think outside of the box, now.”

I made a new job, I’m self-employed now
I got a .410 shotgun
Cut the stock and barrel down
It’s just a .410 shotgun
Get the duct tape, wrap it ‘round

I’m bein’ careful, I don’t want too much
I’ll beat the car up from time to time
I’ll change the tires, check the brake lights
Don’t hang around much
I mind my own

It’s just a Mossberg
From the K-Mart
I’m gonna trade up when I get the chance
They give ‘em out now like a door prize
Down at the bank where you get an account

It’s just a .410 shotgun
Cut the stock and barrel down
It’s just a .410 shotgun
Get the duct tape, wrap it ‘round

Just put the cash here
In the brown bag
And a 12-pack for the ride back down the state highway
Listen, buddy, this is buckshot
It ain’t a rifle round

It’s just a fire pole
Ain’t no big thing
‘Bout as loud as a preacher’s shout
Enough to get you into trouble
It ain’t enough to get you out

It’s just a .410 shotgun
Cut the stock and barrel down
It’s just a .410 shotgun
Get the duct tape, wrap it ‘round

It’s just a .410 shotg

A little more from the Grateful Dead:
"Mexicali Blues"

Laid back in an old saloon, with a peso in my hand
Watching flies and children on the street
And I catch a glimpse of black-eyed girls who giggle when I smile
There's a little boy who wants to shine my feet
And it's three days ride from Bakersfield
And I don't know why I came
I guess I came to keep from payin' dues
So instead I've got a bottle and a girl who's just fourteen
And a damned good case of the Mexicali blues

Is there anything a man don't stand to lose
When the devil wants to take it all away
Cherish well your thoughts, keep a tight grip on your booze
'Cause thinking and drinking are all I have today

She said her name was Billie Jean and she was fresh in town
I didn't know her stage-line ran from hell
She had raven hair, a ruffled dress, a necklace made of gold
And all the french perfume you'd care to smell
She took me up in to her room and whispered in my ear
Go on my friend, do anything you choose
Now I'm payin' for those happy hours I spent there in her arms
With a lifetime's worth of the Mexicali blues

Is there anything a man don't stand to lose
When the devil wants to take it all away
Cherish well your thoughts, keep a tight grip on your booze
'Cause thinking and drinking are all I have today

And then a man rode in to town, some thought he was the law
Billie Jean was waiting when he came
She told me he would take her if I didn't use my gun
And I'd have no one but myself to blame
I went down to those dusty streets, blood was on my mind
I guess that stranger hadn't heard the news
'Cause I shot first and killed him, Lord he didn't even draw
And he made me trade the gallows for the Mexicali blues

Is there anything a man don't stand to lose
When he lets a woman hold him in her hands
You just might find yourself out there on horseback in the dark
Just riding and running across those desert sands

The Patriot Game - Dominic Behan
And now as I lie here, my body all holes
I think of those traitors who bargained in souls
And I wish that my rifle had given the same
To those Quislings who sold out the patriot game.

I was trying to find the lyrics of a old Jimmy Simpson song about a old Alaskan Sourdough who found his only faithfull companion was "That old 30/06 on the Wall"

Peter Twitchels The Goosers (goose hunting in Alaska)

Da Yoopers.
The 30 Point Buck.

well he was eight foot tall,
weighed twelve thousand pounds,
with every step there was a shakin' on the ground
he was so rutiful so beautiful
strutted right out of my dreams,
he was created by God just for outdoor magazines
now i'm not much for thinkin, no i don't do it often
but i had an idea
to put that turdy pointer in his coffin

Couldn't get to my gernades,
(yeah rite)
the Howitzer was in the shop,
my stomach was tied into a monkey knot.
Ya, my only hope was Betty Lou,
she was the one,
a combination AK 57 oozie radar laser triple-barrel double-scoped hit-seekin shotgun.

The Hollies:
Well, suddenly we hear the sirens
And everybody started to run
Jumping under doors and tables
Well, I heard somebody shooting a gun
Well, the D.A. was pumping my left hand
She was holding my right
Well, I told her, don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall

The Outlaw Way

Well the deed is done
He holds the smokin' gun
Then stands before the
Man on the judgement day
After living life
The outlaw way

The preacher mans words
That the heard are ringin'
True in his head

You live the life
You live to have regret

Cause in the end
You'll have to pay the debt

He's been runnin' with the
devil in the dark of night
but the sun is commin' up
and he can see the light
but it's too late now
because the deal's been done.

Hey Joe

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Alright.
I'm goin down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
And that ain't too cool.
(Ah-backing vocal on each line)
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down
You shot her down now.
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot you old lady down
You shot her down to the ground. Yeah!
Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' 'round
Messin' 'round town.
Uh, yes I did, I shot her
You know I caught my old lady messin' 'round town.
And I gave her the gun and I shot her!

Ballad of Irving by Frank Gallop:

He was short and fat, and rode out of the West
With a Mogen David on his silver vest
He was mean and nasty right clear through
Which was kinda weird, 'cause he was yellow too
They called him Irving
Big Irving
Big, short Irving
Big, short, fat Irving
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West
He came from the old Bar Mitzvah spread
Schlepping a salami and pumpernickel bread
He always followed his mother's wishes
Even on the range he used two sets of dishes
Irving
Big, fat Irving
Big sissy Irving
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West
A hundred and forty-one could draw faster than he
But Irving was looking for one forty-three
Walked into Sol's Saloon like a man insane
And ordered three fingers of two cents plain
Irving
Big, fat Irving
Big sport Irving
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West
The James Boys was comin' on a train at first sun
And the town said, "Irving, we need your gun"
When that train pulled in at the break of dawn
Irving's gun was there, but Irving was gone
Irving
Big, fat Irving
Big help, Irving
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West
Well, finally Irving got three slugs in the belly
It was right outside the Frontier Deli
He was sittin' there twirlin' his gun around
And butterfingers Irving gunned himself down
Irving
Big, fat Irving
Big dum-dum Irving
Big dum-dum dead Irving
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West
Really

Paul Revere

Song by Beastie Boys

Now here's a little story I've got to tell
About three bad brothers you know so well
It started way back in history
With Adrock, (M.C.A.) and me (Mike D.)
I had a little horse named Paul Revere
Just me and my horsy and a quart of beer
Riding across the land kicking up sand
Sheriff's posse on my tail 'cause I'm in demand
One lonely Beastie I be
All by myself without nobody
The sun is beating down on my baseball hat
The air is gettin' hot the beer is getting flat
Lookin' for a girl I ran into a guy
His name is M.C.A., I said, "Howdy" he said, "Hi"

He told a little story that sounded well rehearsed
Four days on the run and that he's dying of thirst
The brew was in my hand and he was on my tip
His voice was hoarse, his throat was dry and he asked me for a sip
He said, "Can I get some?"
I said, you can't get none!
Had a chance to run
He pulled out his shotgun
He was quick on the draw, I thought I'd be dead
He put the gun to my head and this is what he said,

"Now my name is M.C.A., I've got a license to kill
I think you know what time it is, it's time to get ill
Now what do we have here an outlaw and his beer
I run this land, you understand, I make myself clear."
We stepped into the wind - he had a gun, I had a grin
You think this story's over but it's ready to begin

Although it refers to a different type of bullets than we're accustomed to, I always liked the title of Lynrd Skynrd's "Gimme back my bullets". Allman Brothers' Ramblin Man also related that the father "wound up on on the wrong end of a gun". Then there's Warren Zevon's "Send Lawyers Guns and Money".

-It helps to remember that the Grateful Dead was originally a Bob Wills tribute band... .

And they covered whiskey in the jar which was mentioned earlier as well. Not my favorite version though

Janie's Got a Gun

I remember what a controversy that was when that video showed that the girl killed her abuser. Was a huge deal to show such violence .....how times change.
