That's all I use for my 45/70 Sharps.
Use a drop tube for best results.
I still have to pack the powder down in the loading press.

Yes 3f can work exceedingly well in the 45-70. The biggest draw back is you'll need to watch the fouling control in hot dry weather, as 3f will foul out quicker than 2f if you let the fouling get ahead of you.
Start with just enough powder to make firm contact with the base of the bullet and work up in charge weight from there until you find the accuracy/velocity you want.
