Those in the know may know this, but the SOG Pentagon is an OTF without side to side or up and down blade movement.

But what about in and out movement? Well, sort of.

After initial opening the blade can be pushed in 1-2 millimeters, but then it is locked solid.

I’ve only used my Microtech and Cobratec for opening mail or fun fidgeting. I just don’t feel safe using an unstable knife for anything else. Now I can use this SOG for more substantial chores without the risk of an accident.

It ran me $350, cheaper than a full size Microtech by $150 +. Sure there is no snob factor, but it’s more than a toy.

Accounts of those are not good. There is slight blade play on many of them out there, and the bigger issue is the edge being dulled quickly when running into internals. There was really no issue where blade play has ever caused problems to begin with, looks like sog wanted a cheap version of a Hawk, but many people are not happy on this one.

The in and out play you speak of is a definite no on my end, it would go back to the factory or returned. That's the sear and tang rubbing when it should be fully locked. If you can pull it out a mm that's OK, but if your blade is able to push in a mm that's a problem.

I have 8 Microtechs, they are mostly users. You won't have an issue, the lock is as strong as you can get and they take a lot of abuse.

If you want youtube has a few great videos on how strong a Microtech is

Lastly, by full size did you mean combat troodon? A full size ultratech runs simular price to the SOG.

Yo Mama, we are glad you like the $3000+ worth of knives you show in your picture. Your happiness with what you have should not depend on disparaging the choice made by another member, however. Reinz is happy with his new knife, it is doing what he wants it to do, and I am sure we will hear if it disappoints.

I was not disparaging in any way. I let him know about problems many people are having to beware of. That way if it happens to him he will know. He also said the sog has no blade play which was their selling point, this is on fact not true on many of them.

He said microtechs are not users, I disagree and showed why.

I think you should re-read what I posted.

Oh, no problem with op saying MT snob factor..........

Yo Mama, no harm no fowl on my end. Thanks for the education. I appreciate knowing that there should not be that movement going in.

I own a handful of Microtecs. I don’t think I’m a MT snob, but the “factor” is there, maybe in the back of your mind. Come on, admit it :D

I’ve seen the videos before, but I’ve been cut by an unstable knife before. So maybe I’m just gun-shy about my MT’s.

Regardless, you gave me some things to think about. After all, that’s what forums are for.

Much appreciated! Yeah that was all I wanted just to give you a heads up.

Most of them don't, but there are reports of those with a wee bit. Still tighter than most other OTFs out there and certainly at a fraction of the cost of the Hawks and Harkins.

Sure there is no snob factor, but it’s more than a toy.

Since I've been collecting and using MTs, Daltons, MOD Harkins, etc. for ...well... since they first came out, I can assure you that they're useable. There's a lot of fanboy base out there, but before the fanbois and big booths at Blade, the MODs and MTs and Daltons were used by a range of very serious folks.

As knife nuts we shouldn't be trying to build up by tearing others down ... especially when it isn't borne out by
