I have shot several 4" 10s over the years - pencil and bull barrel. I even bought a new 2" 10-11 on closeout nearly five years ago. It further whetted my appetite for a 4" 10. Well, the prices are crazy - gunshows particularly. The 'collectors' have driven the price way up on all of the original 'M&P'. A 'shooter' now runs $325++. And, then there is the blued handgun and me problem. You can see scratches, aka 'character', develop on them as they just sit near me. Oh, for a SS 10 - a 64!

Well, my pusher had a few 64s... -8s, actually, with the IL and a two piece barrel. The latest - literally 'as new' - with all the paperwork, including 'Club 1852' application, and the master Lock and box. They were $309 - makes $327 with s/t. You bet I bought one - with my wife standing next to me - and I carelessly admitted to nearly $1100 going to the pusher in the last 2+ weeks (I had recently bought a 4" 627 Pro.). My wife likes the 4" 64 - says she looks forward to shooting it - which worries me since I told her it was a 'house' gun (It replaces my 625MG in .45 Colt.). I may go shoot it in the AM... I'll report back afterwards - and post a picture.

You will like it. My blue 4" HB 10-6 is my favorite .38 for extended shooting sessions with. I put K Targets on it. Makes a world of difference.

Well, a quickie range trip proves it is well regulated for windage - and probably for normal 158gr LSWC/LRN, elevation wise, at 12-25yd. It seemed to hit a tad high, 1-2 inches at 25yd, with the +P Remington R38S12 158gr LHPSWC - and 2 inches low with my 125gr HP Berry's bullet plinker (3.5gr Titegroup/Fed SP primer) - probably ~790 fps from the 4" tube, but I'll likely chrono it in a week or two, as I will use it for my local SPC, where they just have to 'ping' the steel plates - bo minimum power factor required. I shot ~ 60 rounds mixed, 'FBI' loads and plinkers. Worked great - should see lots of range time. I borrowed the Ahrends square conversion non-fg cocobolos from my 696. As you can see, I cleaned it - it really is a new revolver - and I am quite happy with it.

PS My wife wasn't fond of the recoil with the 'FBI' load... odd, she liked my previous house gun - the .45 Colt MG!

Stainz.....Every time I see those grips I want to send a check to Ahrends. :D

I actually did send a check the other day for that grip/wood in a N Frame size. If mine are that purty I will be very pleased, but my 696 will be jealous. :)

Mr Stainz, you did it again.

She looks quite nice in the wooden outfit.

You mentioned there was another one of those available at your supplier.

I checked the California roster, the M 10 -8 is on the list. It happens to be that around here one can't find anything at the number of Dollars you quoted.

I wonder, if it would be worth to consider and/or attempt an out of state sale and ship one over here to my FFL ... :)

My enabler is 'southeasternguns.com' - and the revolver is a used (ANIB) S&W 64-8 for $309 - they had at least one more. Call them Monday AM - their phone number is on the home page. Mike is the owner. They can be aggravating to deal with - like all gun stores - but they carry a bunch of new S&W revolvers - and have good prices.

I have to go... I can hear my 696 sobbing in the safe from here... it wants it's grips back! I guess I'll be sending Ahrends some moola myself! You know, when you think about how much more a mere tank of gas costs today than those Ahrends, they aren't so bad!

Att: Stainz My Ole' Friend-

Recently, I was think'in along the same lines as you; as I purchased
a ANIB factory nickel, 4" pencil barrel, square butt S&W model 10-5
with diamond grips and a C737xxx* S/N. This weapon is pristine in all
aspects; and will join my 1975 S&W 4" factory nickel model 19-3
that has the original box and doc's. However, neither one will be a
"shooter"; but rather "safe queens"~! ;) :D

*FootNote: S/N dates way back to between 1963-1965; most likely
manufactuered in late '63 or very early '64.

Congrats, I've been in the market for one myself, though every 10 I've seen in shows around Atlanta got pretty high prices, with the exception of ones in poor condition. Look forward to the report, glad to see someone who doesn't brag about safe 'queens' *coughcough...Dan*

Just to be certain, fellas, my new '10' is actually a current production 64, the SS version of the 10. It won't ever be as pretty, much less as collectible, as your's , Ala Dan, my good friend. You have a keeper... mine is to be a regular noise maker at the range - and a bedside 'greeter' for bg's!

Still - there is just something about a pencil barrel on a 10 with that squared grip. Make mine blue, however. My luck with blued guns is poor - they gain character (scratches) when I look at them. Nickel fare worse here - the plating doesn't peel here - it falls off! Maybe it's the battery acid I use to clean them with?

PS I still use Hoppes #9 to clean with - just something traditional about the smell!
