I got 150 acres to hunt on last year, just a clear-cut with newly-planted pines so I didn't know what to expect.
I hunted the thicker areas in bow and muzzleloading seasons without much success but finally found that most of the deer were bedding and feeding in the 2 yr.-old clearcut with head-high dog fennels.
I got the tractor and bush-hogged trails through the area with several intersecting. Almost immediately deer and turkeys started using them.
A week ago I sat in a stand with little visibility so I chose a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt to hunt with. Right at daylight an 8 point came by at 11 yards and he heard my revolver drag along the leather holster as I drew it. He bolted and I stopped him at 25 yards and rushed a shot.
I found a clump of cut hair where the bullet gave him a tiny hair cut on his brisket. I got my dog and we searched for an hour and never found any blood just the cut hair.
Two days later I set up where my new trails intersected and saw a doe and fawn and a 3 point with a broken antler on one side. Then on Sunday morning a young 6 point came out at daybreak and I shot him at 30 yards with my Ruger 77 in .25-06. In my younger days I would have let him 'walk and grow' but at 76 I may not be able to see the results later on. Besides, I needed some venison.
