So there was a fire at my apartment complex. It happens. But as I watched the firefighters go in I began to think, "what if fire breaks out in my apartment?" in lieu of having bulk amounts of ammunition in the closet. "What if it cooks off?"

What is a good way to store it?

As long as it's not contained in some sort of container like an ammo can, all that it will do is give a loud "pop" when the pressure inside the cartridge builds up to the point where the bullet is forced out.

Well, a few years ago a neighbor's house caught fire. He was a hunter, had somewhere in the neighborhood of a couple hundred rounds of ammo. When the fire reached his ammo storage (not sure what it was stored in, possibly just the retail boxes in his closet) the ammo started cooking off. This was definitely louder than a "loud pop" it sounded much more like actual shots being fired.

Glad you asked this as it is something I've been wondering about myself. SDC, you mention that the rounds would jsut pop off if not in an ammo can. I'm pretty ignorant, I guess, but I have my ammo in ammo cans, sorted by type (pistor, shotgun, etc). I'm inferring this is a bad thing with repect ot fire.

What would be better? (and also give me good portability?)
