First gun you let your child/grandchild other kid shoot

My daughter started on a Ruger 77/22 in .22WMR. She is more accurate with that rifle than I am. She loves shoot and see targets because she likes to make smiley faces.

I introduced my daughter (9 at the time) to shooting with a Gamo Recon (no sights) youth pellet rifle with a 4x scope and then a red dot. The red dot was better in every way. Then I moved her up to a Remington Model 5 repeating bolt gun, but started off with the single shot adapter in place.

I introduced my step daughters (upper teens at the time) to shooting with a "Makarov" air pistol and then moved them up to a Beretta Neos.

Airsoft for familiarization or marksmanship, manipulation, safety rules, etc. for a while. Then... HK33:

Well, it varied. A couple chose that, not sure why, but I gave them the choice of the arms room. Many were just happy to play with the NODs, wear armor, etc.

This one went for the shiny 5946 as first live shot:

Yeah, the pre-work on airsoft even got her a good overhand grip.

She'd seen it before. It's a good couple years when the kids are fascinated enough by the guns you can get them to do menial tasks like loading, cleaning :)

(We fostered. Did first shots for probably a dozen kids. I'll note that the state, agency, workers, etc DNGAF. As long as remotely safe and we locked them up at home, no problem.)

No kids.

The first gun I ever let my wife shoot was an HK P7 followed by a Smith Model 60. Then she became a parole officer and got to shoot Glock 22s and 23s as well as Rem 870 shotguns. I don’t think she has ever even shot a .22. She is not a firearms enthusiast.

My son is 11 and has been around BB guns for a while now. He recently shot a .22 and is now after my Glock 19!
I hope to start him in competition shooting soon. That way keep him from trouble

I don't have kids of my own--good on you that do--but I learned with an old Benjamin Sheridan pellet rifle (it's since been handed down to me, awaiting a rebuild), and then a .22 rifle and pistol, and encourage others to do the same.
In a reversal, whenever I find myself at the range with the old-timers that invariably say "I'll tell you a thing or two about shooting," I make sure the first of my guns they get to shoot is my mosin nagant. That usually leaves them more open for discussion.
Use me as a reference for what not to do with kids.

I let my stepdaughter shoot my SIG 522 when she was 5. My wife was nervous and insisted on being there but it was nice that I have some pictures of her first shots! She wasn't strong enough to hold the gun so I just let her pull the trigger while I tried to "aim from the hip" at some steel plates but it got her hooked. When she was 7 I started her on handguns with a Ruger Mark I. The picture of her with it is a screenshot of a video I have of her going 9/9 at 7 yards on beer cans later that same year. I was pretty proud! She got her own Red Ryder when she turned 8, and then a M&P 15-22 when she turned 10.

My next oldest is 3 now. She hasn't shot anything yet, but when she sees me getting guns out she always asks if she can come with me. She's all about putting on safety glasses and ear muffs and sitting in the grass watching!

The same .22 my Dad, uncle, and I learned on for my older one. He broke the stock soon after. :fire: His brother started on my grandpa's Western Field (Mossberg) .22 bolt as his first firearm, but he shot the older one's BB gun first (without my permission :fire:) and took the side window on my Bronco out.

I have no kids, and obviously no grandkids. But I look forward to teaching my nephew to shoot. I doubt my niece will ever want to learn.

Of course, their super liberal, "I'm scared of guns." parents will probably never let it happen.

Maybe I'll marry a woman with a kid. Of course...…………….. I live in the desert of women. So...…………………

Can you teach a cat to shoot?

36 years ago I took my 4 year old daughter with me to the Fort Bliss Rod & Gun Club (still have a Life membership, wonder if it is still good?).

She was wearing muffs and glasses, watching me shoot various handguns. While reloading she asked "Daddy, can I try?" Smallest pistol I had was a Colt 1908 in .380 ACP. After giving some instruction on grip and stance (she was already well versed on safety) we stepped up to the firing line with one round in the magazine. Seeing that she had no trouble handling that, I loaded up the mag and let her fire it dry. A couple of magazines more and then it was time to go home

She still remembers that day, and carries a Glock 19.

My youngest son doesn't have much interest in guns, but has always been around them. I bought him a Crickett single shot rifle when he was about 7 yo. He enjoyed shooting it but has pretty much out grown it now.

He helped build his first AR when he was 12 yo.

He then had me buy new furniture for it.

And pretty much built his second AR on his own at the age of 14. I just wish he would come shooting with me more.

I've started my girls on an old Glenfield 75C. It is a 19" barreled version of a Marlin model 60. My younger girl (the 12 year old) doesn't really like firearms. I've got to figure out some way to get her interested enough to develop some competence with them before she is grown. My older girl (the 14 year old) likes to shoot & will shoot with me anytime I ask her to. The 14 year old likes to shoot my AR & my pistols. The first handgun she shot was my .45 acp SR-1911 when she was 12. I only loaded one round. After she shot it she looked at me and said, "Wow". I thought oh no I gave her too much recoil. Then she grinned from ear to ear & I knew she was hooked. I haven't let my boy (6) shoot anything more powerful than a Daisy BB gun yet. His day will come but I don't think he is mature enough for that yet.

At 6 yrs old, the Red Ryder. Now at 7, a.31 caliber colt pocket. BP.
And the Cleaning afterwards. He and I both absolutely loved the adventure.

For several of my grandkids along with quite a few nieces and nephews, the first gun they shot was a VZ-24 in 8x57 or a C-Stocked 1903 30-06, both using Trail Boss loads and 150 gr bullets. Almost no recoil at all and relatively quiet. Still does a number on full soda cans at about 20 yards. :D The rest were a marlin bolt-action 22 or aren't old enough to shoot yet.

My two daughters were born before my two boys. They all started with a Chipmunk .22 lr., Then graduated to 10-22, handguns were Colt target .22 then .44 Mag loaded to .44 Sp velocities. Rifles M1. Remington 700 in .22-250. Shotgun started with a 28 gauge up to 20 than 12. They are all in their late 30's and 40's now so shooting is limited.

No kids/grandchildren of my own but several from past/present relationships. All started off with a .177 pellet rifle then a pellet pistol. Once safety and aim were good enough graduated to a single shot .22 rifle and a Rough Rider with the .22LR cylinder. Then as appropriate to larger recoil. I am proud of each and every one of them to this day.

.22 long rifle under supervision. one is a cop now and the other is a minister. off course they both still shoot and own many guns.
