Well, finally did it today and bought my first handgun -- the XD45 tactical in all black. Stopped by the range/gun shop on my way home from work and made a deal on three pistols, one of which they had in stock, and two that they have on order for me that will be arriving in 3 weeks.

Then the tough part. I had to go home and tell my wife (before she saw the credit card receipt) the news. She was a bit surprised at me at first and wonders "why today of all days?" "Why not? I said. I got a good deal and it was on my way home!" She then asked what I had planned this evening and I just smiled from ear to ear and asked if she would mind if I went back to the shop to shoot my new gun for the first time. She said "go have some fun". Wow, I love this woman! I might get her to the range yet!!

I took my cleaning bag and supplies and headed back to the range to strip and clean all the new pistol gunk off the XD45, re-lube it, and then took my spot on the range. Loaded up both mags with .45ACP ammo, put out the targets and shot off my first 20 rounds at my first target. The result? Two nice solid groupings -- one center chest and the other head. About 3.5" the worst of the two. WOW, I love this gun!!! I even let the Range Manager shoot my last 10 rounds as he has the XD9 and has never shot the XD45. His first two shots were dead on in the middle of the targetman's head. I have some work to do!! He loved the pistol and stated that it seemed to be more manageable and dead on aim than his XD9. (He was probably just trying to make me feel good about all the money I had just spent).

I was surprised at the smoothness of the gun and the cushion of the recoil. I was expecting more. Of course I was only using 186gr ammo so maybe that was why? But very manageable to shoot. I was looking forward to having this bigger gun to shoot. Now I know I made the right choice. The other two pistols I have on order are the CZ SP01 and the CZ 75B in nickel finish. I have the .22cal Kadet conversion kit already to use with the CZ's as the cost of ammo is going to bankrupt me by the time I can get my trigger finger and grip trained properly!!

But I wanna tell you guys...I am still grinning from ear to ear! I am SOOOO addicted to this already. By brother (1911fan on this forum) was very excited to have another member of our family join the handgun owners society. He will probably be reading this post a little later tonight. If I can figure out how to do it I will post photos of my first ever range target with my own handgun (I have probably only ever shot 250 rounds of handgun ammo in my life, not counting the 100 rounds tonight. I have shot plenty of rifles in my days. Got my first pellet rifle when I was 11 years old).

Anyway, just thought I would pass along my excitement to some who might understand. My two boys are pretty excited too. Guess where I will be tomorrow afternoon? (playing hookie from work). .....and this Saturday afternoon!! :)

Thanks! I am pretty anal when it comes to research and have been doing plenty for the past 3 months at a feverish pace. Even took a trip down to Texas with my two boys a few weeks back to visit my brother and shoot his pistols to help in the decision. He has the CZ P01 and XD9 amongst a few others.

I am pretty happy so far with my choice. Thanks for your feedback too.

Sounds like you're off to great start. I have little experience with XDs but am a big fan of CZs.

first and foremost congrats on the xd and the other guns. you made an awesome choice in the xd brother. i have 2 xd's and have used almost every model they have and i love em all. the xd will serve you well for a long time and you won't be dissapointed and sa has some of the best customer service in the industry so if anything goes wrong they will take care of you. buy up all the ammo you can you will need it, shooting xd's is the most addicting thing!

Thanks possum. Now all I have to do is find a relatively innexpensive source of .45acp ammo in Canada! The stuff they sell me at the range is $28 for a box of 50 rounds. Works out to $.58 per round. I think I should be able to get something cheaper out there that will not damage my gun. If anyone knows of anything, please share the secret (no, I am not interested in re-loading my own).

He's like a kid on Christmas! Congrats on the gun. I knew you'd like it. Now I want one.

Quite honestly, I don't remember being this giddy and excited about anything since my wedding night 20 years ago! Literally ear to ear smiles since I plunked down my money yesterday.

Congrats on the gun purchases!
My XD has not had a single hicup yet and the trigger is easy to get used to.

Your SP-01 I can't say enough good things about.
I just started point of aim shotting and the thing tears up the 3" bullseye.
Minimal recoil with 9mm rounds.

The Kadet conversion kit is a great idea; I just wish I could find one cheaper.
My Buckmark cost less then the kit.

Good luck with them all!

does walmart exist in Canada?
Here a box of 100 winchester .45 acp is $26 USD.

Other than that, you *could* get into reloading. If you use Lee equipment the investment will pay for itself in the first 1000 rounds or so... because it's $9 for 100 rds of .45acp made at home versus $26... so (26-9) * 10 boxes or 1000 rds = $170 that you saved.

Thanks Doberguy. Last night I shot 185gr .45ACP ammo. What do you know about using hotter 230gr .45ACP in the XD45? Does the gun handle it just fine?
xd's will handle anything that you put through it, within reason of course, no overstuffed bubba's handloads, and such, but anything you find that is factory loads no matter how hot it is it will be fine in the xd.

Being a life long 1911 fanI never thought I'd say this .
I now have 2 favorite 45 pistols. Picked up the same thing, black XD45 tactical in Feb and never looked back.
The grip being slightly larger makes recoil (I have trouble saying this) better than the 1911. Also 13+1 rounds of 45acp :D That reminds me got to order more bullets.
Glad you like it!

Winchester white box from wal mart (if available in your area) is a 230gr load, I use it every time I go to the range and it has worked without fail every time through thousands of rounds in my XD.45. I shoot 185gr+p golden sabers for a defensive load which also work perfectly.

Without a doubt, one of the best decisions I ever made was the one to buy my XD45 Compact.

Shooting the XD is a joy to experience. Mine soon began over-eating and I began reloading to keep up with it. Now I have opened a whole new realm of enjoyment. I love the process of reloading as much as I love shooting.

I load mainly 230gr RNL and have had great results. A word of warning though, XD45's and SWC bullets can be like oil and water. I never could get them to function in my gun, although some have claimed success.

I've posted this pic before, but here is my XD after my first trip to the range with my own handloads.

I got so happy that I pulled the two rounds at 8 o'clock out of the group but I was still one very happy camper that afternoon! :D

Same goes for me. No flavor of SWC will feed reliably. It's sort of annoying but I can live with it because I really like the XD. 230gr RNL is mostly what I use.
p.s. Nice shooting!
