First handgun purchase - CZ83

I have the CZ83 in .32, .380 and 9x18. Good guns. High magazine cost, if you can find them.

The .32 is a mild shooting gun.

If .380 is available I'd shoot it far more readily than I would .32ACP. That said, .32 can be found a little cheaper than the $29 quoted earlier. I shoot the Fiocchi .32ACP in my converted Nagant revolver and it's only $11 per box:

You might also look into a Beretta Cheetah which is a good "small round" gun too. Its available in .32ACP and .380. ATI imports a copy of this currently (definitely in .380 - not sure if they do a .32 version) that sells for about $280.

Newbieshooter - I think, given the parameters your put forth, that the CZ83 in .32acp is an excellent choice and definitely a pistol that should last a lifetime with any care. I had a CZ83 in .380 several years ago and have come to miss it greatly. I may try to get another one day. The CZ83 is a fine pistol.

Yes, but so is a berreta, a bersa, or a star if you can find one.
I would say it's a great gun, but don't limit yourself to just that gun.

Fine gun. Only con is the caliber. It can be pricey, relative to others, and is not known as a great man-stopper. Better than nothing? Yes.

ammo price, yes it can be bit pricey. Online ammo can be cheap but when we add shipping to it, it comes out to be almost same. But I like the gun, especially CZ 83 and what the heck will buy one :)

I am also planning to buy a used 10/22 rifle for whole day plinking :) where I don't have to worry too much about the ammo prices :D

I have this exact gun, a CZ83 in .32acp and it's one of my favorite guns. Accurate, soft shooting and easy to maintain. It also has a remarkably nice single action trigger. If ammo availability in India is good, I say go for it!

Ditto. It's a nice gun, very accurate, easy to shoot well. The only caution is to be sure you buy a CZ83, .32acp with the new, redesigned magazine. The rear panel of the mag is inset a bit to prevent rimlock.

Here's a pic of the two different mags.

Does the re-designed mag with the inset still allow use of full metal jacket or is it restricted to hollowpoints? (Which I would expect.)

I would rephrase it to
"it's pinned and pressed in, for a experienced person it could take as little as a 5 min job for someone with a barrel press to swap barrels."

They are pinned in, but can be punched out and swapped. The pinned design means that the barrel does not move in relation to the slide, making it accurate for a smallish pistol. I say smallish, as the 82/83 are middle of the road in size. Even for large hands, it is quite comfy.

Just my .02 cents but, if the CZ 83 in .380 is a "legal" weapon to transfer to yourself, I'd go with that. I have, and often carry the 83 as my primary weapon. It is comfortable in my hand, and I have rather large paws, fairly light for a non polymer pistol, and will eat any and all ammo I feed it. Though it really likes Winchester 90 grn FMJ. And it does fairly well with the cheap Russian ammo as well. Just a major pain to clean after a day at the range though. But for the price of around 12 bucks for 50, I can live with it.

And if that's not your liking, go with a used Mak in 9x18 like many others have suggested. Either way, I'm sure you'll be pleased no matter what pistol or caliber you get.

Can you buy Chinese ammo in India? If so, you can probably get .32 acp on the cheap. I think the CZ-83 is a great choice... very reliable gun.

Oh I wish. Made in china ammo is the only thing that is not availabe :). Indian ordinance factory is the only entity that manufactures ammo and firearms and unfortunately we have to stick to that :(

The Walther PPK comes to mind. I have one in mint condition that I carry sometimes. However, have you consider Cz83 in 9mm Mak?
