Shot my first round of organized trap today hit 17 out of 25 third in my group . I was shooting my 18" barreled 870 with everyone else shooting guns made for trap shooting . So I don't feel I did too bad

Cool! And a lotta fun once you got past the fear, right!?

The statistic is the average first time Trap shooter hits 13 birds. Now, personally, I don't buy that -- it's too high IMO. But that stat. Accordingly you did very well indeed.

I'd guess you are pretty young and were hitting the birds almost as soon as they came out of the trap house compared to others. I'd also say there is a good chance your 870 jammed at some point and you had to force it open or something. Do I have those right?

In any case, fact is, you did well enough that I would encourage you to continue developing your participation in that shooting sport some. The recommendation to get/use a longer barrel is a seriously valid one but don't get carried away too quickly in this which is very easy. Less is more for a while... Except the barrel.

If you want to continue shooting trap, you might want to get yourself a 28 or 30 inch additional barrel
I'm a lefty 28 " is the only length available for an 870 . I have a gun with a 32" barrel do they make 10 ga trap loads  I will figure out something if I shoot much

Take that 28"barrel and add a Comp-N-choke or Pure Gold and you will be close to 30" as their extensions run long. That longer barrel and a little extra weight will definitely help keep your swing smooth and steady
