I currently own multilpe pistols and am looking to purchase my first assault rifle. I am looking at either an AR15 or AK47. I have a dumb question and would also like some advice as to brand / model reliability and where is the best place to purchase one as our local gun dealers inventory is almost non-existent. Do all current assualt rifles come in single shot, burst and fully automatic? Most everything on Utube is fully automatic - where do they get them?

An assault rifle is Fully automatic or has 3 round Burst. To buy one you have to find one that was made and registered before 1986, You also have to go through extensive paperwork with the ATF.. Finally be ready to spend 15K at the absolute minimum.

Now if you are looking for a semi Auto Rifle, well that is a different story. They look the same as an Assault rifle but without the Machine gun parts.

Assault Rifle is a term made up by the media and the anti- gun folks. For our purposes it is just a rifle. As for semi, burst or full auto just about everything you buy at a standard gun shop is semi auto only. Meaning that one pull of the trigger fires one round and cycles the action. Burst and fully automatic firearms are very expensive and are not found in you average gun shop. If you are looking to go fully automatic you will need to find a Class 3 dealer in your area if your state will allow you to purchase them. And be prepared to spend tens of thousands of dollars. Between the two rifles you have listed I would go for the AR but that is just me. The AK has never done much for me and you can throw all kinds of bells and whistles at the AR. As for brands I like Rock River Arms. My brother has one and it is a dream to shoot, though there are tons of companies turning out AR rifles these days. Hope that helps some and welcome to THR.
What exactally is an "assault rifle"? A rifle with a black stock?
Lots of help that was...

It appears that you are suffering a lack of understanding of the term "assault rifle". Now that my fellow members have informed you what you really want, an AR-15 we can move on.

You will want to find an dealer who is willing to send his FFL to a dealer who you purchase your rifle from. You will have to work out the fee he is going to charge beforehand to avoid any surprises. You can also look on gunbroker to find dealers near you who do this and it will tell you what they charge.

Next you need to start trolling www.gunbroker.com and www.auctionarms.com and www.gunrunnerauctions.com to find what you want. Take your time and be careful. If you know someone who is knowledgeable have them help you. Bid on the one you want and then have your dealer send your FFL once you win it.

Prices are really high right now. You may be able to wait to see if the AWB does not pass. Then prices will go down. If it does pass prices will go much higher though.

Please PM if further questions.

Just out of curiosity, how much firearms experience do you have? Have you been shooting long?

not trying to rip on the guy or anything, but -
Do all current assualt rifles come in single shot, burst and fully automatic?

Pretty much tells me firearms experience is....limited.

Neither am I ripping on him. We shooters and forum members do some of our own monitoring. Perhaps he is too young to be on a forum. Or, if I let the better part of paranoia emerge in this day of "take-the-guns-away", perhaps it is someone posing as a youth, in order to see just how well we are willing to educated.

I know, when my mind starts going down that path, it just goes.

Per Skyrider: Has anyone had an experience with Atlantic Firearms?

Yes. The purchase went off smoothly, and I have confidence in Blaine and his crew. Unfortunately, the rifle he sold me was flawed. I had months of fighting with the manufacturer to get it to work right.

Buy with confidence.

Assault Rifle is a term made up by the media and the anti- gun folks.

The term "Assault rifle" was coined by the Germans 70 years ago with the introduction of the MP44 (Stg44), "Stg" being the abbreviation for "Sturmgewehr", which translates to storm (used as a verb meaning "to assault") rifle and has a very specific definition; Selective fire or full automatic small arm using an intermediate rifle cartridge.

"Assault weapon" is the made-up hot button phrase.

Now that you know how to refer to a Semi auto "Assault Style" firearm. You will be happy with Either you purchase, then soon will want the other!!!

Stubbicat what did you buy that you had issues with the factory ? Was this resolved ? Please let us know becuse if we have a supplier not backing up the product lines we need to know, please feel to drop us a email [email protected]

I am mildly shocked you would suggest that. I know you don't mean any disrespect, but I can't see how you possibly got that idea from a simple forum question. It is a very easy mistake to misconstrue the media's use of the term "assault rifle" - in fact, that is what they WANT.

To the OP, it has long been debated which platform is "best", between the AR15 and the AK47. Do a search on either of the terms in this forum, and you will get a lot of debate and information.

For ARs, I like POF. For AKs, I like Saiga.
In MY opinion, a gun owner should own an AK47 before an AR15. My reasoning is that, the gun just works. Even in the harshest conditions (such as most wars or a survival situation), the gun is very reliable without demanding the level of cleaning of most other guns.
