So, there I was, looking at the smatchet thread again, and thinking about what sort of fixed blade knife I want.

I am looking for a general purpose tool and weapon.

I have heard good things about the Ka-Bar, it seems to be a popular knife and if I broke or lost it I would not be heartbroken. Also looked at the Cold Steel SRK, that also looks like a useful knife.

Think I want a single edge, but I am not sure, never used a double edged blade as a tool, too worried about cutting myself I guess.

Have several folding knives and multitools already.

So does anyone have any recommendations or observations?

Used a GI issue Ka-Bar that belonged to my grandfather and went through WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Still holds an edge and a dang good piece of steel.

Depends on a number of factors including intended use and your budget.

Without knowing much more, I'd recommend giving a look at the SOG Seal 2000.

For a large combat knife that can be used for chopping, bush clearing and axe-like functions, you can check khukris. Himalayan Imports has some wonderful knives.

This is the one I'll be adding to my tool kit as soon as "the check" arrives. (Well, right after ordering the 870P.)

Seems a good general purpose knife. I've owned a SOG tool for years. Great knife. Next to my SAK, gets used a lot.

Haven't had a fixed blade in years. Did a lot of web research, reading reviews & opinions. Looked at a bunch in stores.

The Seal Pup Elite consistently says, "buy me".

I like the look of that BK-7, more than the SRK.

More than a Ka-Bar at half the price? Well, I could eventually get both, leave the Ka-Bar in the truck...

That Boker smatchet keeps saying "buy me"...

Is using a big knife like using a hatchet? I have used a machete to clear brush, but those are thin and light.

Guess I am a bit unclear about what tools I want in the tool box.

I do prefer a saw for cutting trees and branches, have my trusty e-tool for lots of stuff, perhaps I just want the big knife for the sake of having a big knife.

A few here, a few there, soon you end up with a lot of sharp pointy things laying around. Kind of like things that go boom.

Maybe I do need all of them...

:D

You've got that right! In fact, I have that on the way to go along with my SOG Seal 2000. Someone in another forum has this idea to get a sheath that piggybacks the two. That would be so cool (and useful)!
