I've done my share of searching and I'm not getting the info that I'm looking for, concerning fixed or adjustable sights.

I'm going to purchase a revolver in 45 Colt with a 7 1/2" barrel, but my decision is with the brand...Uberti Cattleman Bisley (fixed sights) or a Ruger Bisley (adjustable sights). :banghead: Both are quality revolvers, but I'll be using this handgun for hunting purposes and am concerned if fixed sights will meet the demand for good accuracy.

What do you use for your hunting revolver....fixed or adjustable sights?

Your opinions and experiences are appreciated.
Thank you, Bowhunter57

If this is going to be a hunting gun and you aren't going to use a scope I would highly recommend adjustable sights. With adjustable sights you can use any ammo you want instead of buying the ammo that shoots close to POA with fixed sights.

Hunting gun = Adjustable sights.

Hunting gun = Ruger.

The Cattleman is a good gun, but is basically a Colt SAA, and as such is not well suited to powerful hunting ammo you may want to use.
It is just not nearly as strong as the Ruger.

Plus, fixed sights may or may not (Very probably not) shoot to point of aim with powerful hunting ammo, and there is not much you can do about it.

IMHO: Unless you reload, or are independently wealthy, the .44 Mag would be a better choice for hunting. The .45 Colt can equal or exceed the .44 Mag in power, but the selection of hunting ammo is very limited, and very expensive compared to the .44 Mag.

Sorry I forgot to mention that, rcmodel is totally correct in telling you not to shoot hunting ammo in a SAA clone. It just won't stan up to the heavy rounds. I agree the Ruger will be a much better choice.

I have never had an issue getting my fixed sight guns to hit what I want to, but I must quantify that by saying that there are yardage, bullet weight, or velocity restrictions on that. For a hunting gun, you would be real hard pressed to beat an adjustable sighted Ruger in any caliber rrelative to anything else. If you handload, or only plan to shoot this gun on a limited basis, I'd go with the .45 Colt. In a non-new Vaquero guise, you can load that 45 up to top a 44 Magnum without too much difficulty.
P.S. I like the 7-1/2" bbl. and the standard Blackhawk grip frame better than the Super Blackhawk layout too.

Thank you, for the replies, so far. :)

I keep reading/hearing more positive feedback on the Ruger's strengths of being able to handle a wider range of loads and having more flexability with having adjustable sights.

As much as I like the looks of the Uberti, I feel that I'd be better served with a Ruger, for my intended usage. I will reload for this handgun, because I want to use different loads for different game animals. An 800 to 900 f.p.s. load with a cast semi-wadcutter will give me plenty of accuracy and knockdown for small game/varmints. Whereas an 1100+ f.p.s. load with a jacketed hollow point will be a better choice for whitetails, this fall.

The best price I've found for a new Ruger Bisley, so far, has been $488.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57
