Google and the search function are failing me so hopefully someone can help. Does anyone know if there are any written instructions on disassembling a commercial FN Mauser bolt? The rifle is a JC Higgins model 50 and belongs to my boss. The owner's manual does not provide specific instructions for disassembly. Apparently it has a 2 position safety and the standard procedure for disassembling a Mauser bolt doesn't quite work. I have not tried to help as he didn't bring it into work, so I'm not really up to speed on the specific issue. From what I have read FN did make some changes to reduce the cost of bolt production over time and I don't know when the rifle was produced but will find that out if it makes a difference.

Many of them with a low scope safety have a small hole in the cocking piece.
Hook it on the edge of a bench and pull it back out of the bolt sleeve far enough to stick a pin punch or nail in the hole.

Then you can depress the bolt sleeve lock and unscrew it normally.

Thanks RC. That does sound like it will address his issue. I wish he had brought it to work. I expect that will solve his issue but I won't know unitl this evening/tomorrow. I will update either way.

If it's one of the early models without the hole you can simply pull the cocking piece back using the non-marring edge of a wood block and slip a dime between the shroud and the CP. Then unscrew as usual.

I think you have it Cypress. The report I got today is that it did not have the hole. He had already thought of the dime trick.

Thanks.
