I'm wanting a bolt-action rifle with the intention of making a 300-yard gun for fun and coyote control. I want to stick with .308 since I already load for it.

I'm looking at an FN Mauser made in belgium. I have a couple of milsurp Mausers and the quality is apparent in the design. I know that the internal lockwork is somewhat slow between trigger pull and firing pin strike, but I'm not looking for competition!
Anyway, there's an FN Mauser in .308 and it seems like a nice rifle. Anybody care to elaborate on what one is worth in nice shape, and am I making a mistake by thinking about it?

I thought about a Tikka T3 and the Mossberg TR100, and the Savage Model 10. I like Savage as well, price is about the same as the FN Mauser.

Evan:

I Don't know how much you enjoy altering your guns or how willing
you are to "bubba" an old Mauser, so I may be out of line.

A Tubb firing pin & spring combined with a Timney trigger will
turn an old Mauser action amazingling slick (there are probably
other market parts as good, I've only used these).

The bolt and receiver is a nice match to .308 conversion (new barrel)
and you can optionally convert to available removeable mags.

You'll want to change sights or scope as well. I can't say how this
stacks up financially, but you may enjoy the process and the result
will be your rifle. Just a thought.
