I did some horse trading last week and picked up a SCAR 16S in FDE. It is practically new as the gent only put about 100 rounds through it. He had a 17S and had sold it before we did the deal, would not have minded getting that one too.

This came with a Vortex Strike Eagle Scope. It's accurate, recoil is nil and I really like it so far. I added the Inforce light and the Knights forward grip.

Anyone else have any comments on theirs?

High dollar rifle, check
High dollar scope mount, check
50 cent scope..
Im guessing the previous owner ran out of money?

Good rifles. I dont own one but have shot several. Congrats...

It is by no means a bad rifle, but was developed to replace the M4 in the Special Operations community. We saw it as a solution looking for a problem, and it was rejected. I know they are popular with civilian shooters. Enjoy!

Everything firing 556 NATO is going to be rejected by .mil as a replacement for the current M4/M16. No matter how much better the replacement would be, the end effect (the bullet) will be the same and new rifles would cost real money*.

Until a new technology like case telescoped or careless is implemented on an industrial scale, don't look for the current rifle to change.

BSW

*Besides the actual cost of the rifle there is the cost of training, spare parts, training armorers, and new documentation.

Correct. All of these problems were cited in our evaluation of the SCAR 16. The concept was to make the switch "mid-war", but to only issue it to SOF units (the rest of the mil had no interest or $). A key issue we had with it was the fact that no support or spare parts would be available for it OUTSIDE of the SOF community. Meaning that if a part needed to be replaced or repaired, and the user wasn't located with SOF support infrastructure, a conventional armament facility would not be able to provide any support to repair or replace the weapon.

BTW in case you were unaware, don't use a magpul mag in these unless you remove a bit of polymer at the rear U notch where it engages the bolt stop, or you could damage your rifle. Any STANAG mag is fine.

You can remove the lower receiver and insert a mag with one or two rounds in it (or remove the follower) and see if it moves the bolt stop up a little. If it does, the mag will have to be modified before you use it in the SCAR.

You are incorrect here, the Vortex Strike Eagle Scope is really a very good scope for the price. I doubt any one really needs better unless shooting beyond 400 yards or heading into actual combat.

I have a SCAR 17S and have a "cheap" Primary Arms 5X prismatic scope on it. The BDC works great with a 100 yard zero, and after regularly hammering a 2 moa (8") steel plate at 400 yards using milspec ammo I've concluded I certainly don't need better until I can find a place to shoot offering significantly longer ranges.

I prefer to spend my money on guns and ammo, optics are a necessary evil simply because these old eyeballs just can use iron sights effectively any more.

Lots of folks think you need to spend more on the scope than you do on the rifle -- sure if shooting PRS matches at extreme distances using $1.50+ a round ammo. But for most folks who have a hard time finding places to shoot past 200 yards its just not money well spent beyond "pride of ownership". YMMV.

+1. Vortex Strike Eagles work fine. Unless you get picky about glass, then you go with the Vortex Razor which is twice the price.

Vortex may have been a budget brand at first. But they're one of the few scope builders actually listening to the competition world. 3 gun and F class, they're real popular lately in 3 gun.

Let us know how you like the scope. I'm going to get a new scope for 3 gun, and the Trijicon Accupower 1-8x is my favorite so far. But I've only seen green versions, and they were too dim. I have to find someone with a red one and a fresh battery. Also a SWFA Super Sniper 1-6x is half the price of the Trijicon, so that's an option.

fair enough... but when your scope mount costs as much as the scope itself, something just don't add up... so the rest of your argument is kinda moot.

I didn't recognize the scope mount as anything special, although they could be a significant (unwarranted IMHO) price premium for a mount in FDE which would seem to be a waste if mounting a black scope :)

I have several Vortex optics- both variable and red dot. The price is not consistent with the quality, and they are backed by a lifetime warranty. I also have a vortex spotting scope. I have no complaints so far of any of their products. A good friend of mine (former SF sniper) is a very accomplished 3 gun competitor, and is sponsored by vortex.

Love the Scar-liked the 17 enough to have bought a 16 to follow.
Awesome rifles and if I had to sell my rifles, they'd be the absolute last I'd let go.
