So I was at the gun shop on Sunday to help a friend pick out a gun (his first gun, no less!) and I stumbled upon the FNP-40. Of course I don't _need_ another .40 but I loved it. Feels great in hand and a bit better balanced than my USPc .40. $450 with 3 mags is a pretty good deal too.

And then today I come home and see the review of the Stoeger Cougar 8000 in Guns & Ammo-- another gorgeous gun!

Part of me wants both :)

The Stoegers seem to be available very inexpensively and everything I can find on the original Berettas seems to be excellent. And it does have a novel design. But I can't find one in the store and so I'd have to order it, and I'm not sure if I like that idea since I've never held one.

I'm not sure if the FNP-40 really offers me anything the USPc doesn't-- another polymer framed gun, similar size, similar weight...

Choices, choices. Any insights? :)

Ok, I couldn't resist. Ordered the Stoeger today :) Dunno how long I'll wait for the FN, but it's not gonna be an immediate purchase.

My wife gave me a Stoeger 8000 Cougar .40S&W last thursday for an early Christmas present. I know she paid $345.00 + tax and backgroung ck since I had to sign for it, and since I have CCW it went home w/me thursday.

I have'nt even shot it yet, but its such a great looking firearm I think I want the 9mm also.

If it performs as well as it looks, and comes close to the report in GUNS & AMMO I'll be pleased. This is my first .40S&W.

Pretty close to what I paid. $312.97 including shipping from CDNN, and I'll have a $30 transfer fee at my dealer plus the background check fee when I pick it up.

I prefer .40S&W for my personal defense round. I currently own a Walther P99 in .40, but am looking to pick up a FNP-40 to compliment it. The stainless FNP's are beautiful!

That's exactly why I decided to buy it now. When everyone puts them on their wish lists and then decides to buy in a few months, they're going to be hard to find once everybody realizes they're out there!

I had a Cougar when they 1st came out in the 1990s. Great gun. If I only had $300 or so to buy a gun, I'd probably get it.

But, I ended up selling mine because I tend to not be as accurate w/ sub 4" barrel guns. I like the longer barrel and sight radius. The Cougar, like the USPc, has the fullsize grip but shorter barrel.

When carrying a gun, the length of the grip is usually what affects me concealing the gun - NOT the length of the barrel.

Given those 2 choices, I'd get the FN. It has a 4" barrel.

Stoeger Cougar question

I'm looking to buy my first handgun, and noticed the good words about the Stoeger Cougar on this thread. I'm new to this board and this is my first post - besides an introduction post.

In the review I read about the Cougar in Guns-Ammo, it said that the first trigger pull in DA is around 12lbs according to the person who reviewed it, and then was significantly less after the first pull.

Was wondering with those who might have this gun - if that is their experience as well - as 12lbs DA pull - from what people have told me is rather large.

Other than that - the reviews I've read about this gun in two magazines is very positive - and this is up there on my wish list for my first gun. Still haven't decided if I want 9mm or .40S&W.
