Foster Slugs

07 May 09 Twelve-gauge slugs work only too well! This from an LEO student in TX: "Last weekend, a local miscreant became upset with his favorite drug retailer, and, as a way of expressing his unhappiness, shot-up the dealer's mobile home, using a twelve-gauge shotgun. The shotgun's magazine tube was charged with four, Foster slugs. All four struck the trailer. One slug was fired lengthwise, through the trailer. It entered the exterior wall, penetrating four interior walls, and exited out the other end. It was not recovered, and is still going, as far as we know! We arrested the idiot, without further incident, shortly thereafter. No one in the trailer was hurt." Comment: Penetration capability of twelve-gauge slugs never fails to astonish me! They go right through what 223 and most pistol rounds never will. /John

Yahh, Kewl beans that! First time I fired a neighbor junvenile delinquent's ( I.E smoked cigarettes and cussed) 12 guage Stevens with 12 " barrel with an old Super X Foster at a dumpster from the hip at about 20 feet and the hole went thru both sides and garbage and spalled the concrete wall about 3" around and 1/2" deep I KNEW I was on to something!

My experience with Foster slugs is different. The first deer I ever killed was with 12 gauge Foster slugs. I shot the deer 4 times at distances under 30 yards and the deer still ran about 100 yards before going down. A couple of the shots were at about 10 yards. All of the shots were body hits with 2 of them being in the chest area.

I still have one of the slugs which didn't even go clear through the small (150) pound deer on a broadside shot. This slug entered the chest area on the right side and stopped under the skin on the left side.

Every time I read about how much stopping power Foster slugs are supposed to have, I remember my first deer and think otherwise.

Trailers aint got what it takes to stop a proper slug. Garden or shotgun.

That is one reason we have sufficient... wall covering in our homes. Some are nothing but shelves of thick books, really thick books by the sack load placed here and there among other tricks.

Foster slugs are often pretty soft lead, and can flatten on impact. That's a primary reason I use Brennekes- if I'm going to slugs, it's because I want penetration. IMHO I'm more apt to get it from the solid, hard lead alloy Brenneke than the hollow soft lead Foster type- though often enough Fosters will overpenetrate for some circumstances. It's another one of those cases of having to be careful what you wish for...

Brennekes will penetrate. The wins that I talked about from time time simply flatten against the backstop and bounce halfway back towards you along the floor that bothers me sometimes...

But true sabots, they might have better penetration if they are built for it specifically.

A 120mm Battle Tank Round is one example Depleted Uranium all the way baby!

But come onnn... these house trailers have like 1/4 inch birch for walls and less than that outside.
