Hi guys, would like to say what a great site this is, for all the help i had got (including when I was looking at a Mauser shotgun) thanks guys.

Anyways, this is what I beleive to be "the one" for me

The guy doesn't know too much about them, but I was on the phone for half an hour asking him and telling him where to look for markings.

This gun has a 42 code (no prefix) with an X underneath, the gun has 1937 german proof marks and has a scope mount on it, and the wood is lam stock (doesnt look shiney like it was done last week) The gun has the orignal sling. The gun looks like to have a very new looking bolt form the picture looks like its been touched up, part of teh has gun has been cut away to accomodate a scope mount,
which will require the wooden parts to be moved to remove it, cannot shoot iron sights with this mount on, the scope mount is a US addon. There are eagles on the side with the 3 horiztonal lined wings. He said there are some other faint markings i.e scribbled out markings, and with that x then this I assume is a russian capture.

So , its original wood (so he says),code 42 (Mauser-Werke AG, Oberndorf a./N, early code) ,russian capture, proofed in Germany 1937, the guy says (as they all do) that the bore is in excellent condition, the price is 250 quid / $500 and it this gun matches virtually all my criteria without making me bankrupt.

what do you guys think ?

I am in the UK...

No expert on Mausers... but a russian capture would generally have the proof marks removed.

Also check the barrel. Ideally put a few patches of Robala Solo Mil... most mausers in Europe still have all of WWII in them.

Cheers...
