While SASS/Cowboy Action Shooting may not interest everyone, some of us find it to be an enjoyable way to compete with revolvers, rifles, and shotguns all at the same time. It pleases us old folks that there are some youngsters with good eyesight, good reflexes, and good manners who enjoy our sport.

Here is a link to a video of Missouri Lefty, a young man of college age, who, after winning the Missouri State Championship match in September, went on to set four new world records in cowboy action shooting.

Gunfighter category requires shooting the revolver targets with a gun in each hand, essentially alternating shots with single action revolvers.

Frontier Cartridge category requires blackpowder (or BP substitute cartridges) in all three types of guns, and shooting the revolvers two-handed.

Frontier Cartridge Duelist also requires all loads to be blackpowder, but requires the revolvers to be shot one-handed, sequentially.

Frontiersman requires the use of percussion revolvers using black powder, shot Duelist style (one-handed), as well as black powder loads in the rifle and shotgun.

The World Record target array specifies 16 inch targets at 7 yards for revolver, rifle at 18 yards, and shotgun knockdowns at 10 yards, with specified spacing between targets.

This is a visual demonstration of cowboy action shooting excellence. I was honored to be able to make the videos.

Good shooting.

Where the old records all held by the same person?

Seems you need to be ambidextrous to do well in these courses of fire.

In the Duelist shooting style most folks shoot both revolvers with the “strong” hand. Of course that means having to transition a revolver from your weak hand and back again.

I held the previous records for the three blackpowder categories, and while I was proud of it I was also a bit embarrassed because I'm not a world class shooter by any means. I occasionally win my category in state level competitions but would be in the middle of the pack at a World Championship match. I am lucky that my club set up the World Record target array and allowed me to practice on it. I encouraged Lefty to try to break my records because I thought the World Records should be held by a competitor that had proven himself by winning the Cowboy Action World Championship, "End of Trail", and Lefty has already accomplished that. It was an honor for me to get beaten by him!

At his age, Missouri Lefty does not have the luxury of competing in all the age-based categories. SASS allows older shooters to compete in age categories younger than their true age, but the kids are not allowed to compete in age categories older than they really are. So Lefty was shut out of attempting to set records in all of the age categories older than him, which are a lot. Giving him the chance to shoot for the blackpowder records seemed a fair way to demonstrate his skills.

And, no I am not ambidextrous, I have to transfer my left side revolver to my right hand. I am much slower shooting left-handed; too much arthritis in the thumb!

Very impressive, especially the shotgun reloads.

You may already know, but some others may not, that SASS rules don’t permit ejectors in side by side shotguns. So when Lefty breaks the gun open after the first two shots he is shaking those empties out of the chambers while reaching for two more shells with his other hand.

If a photographer is using a fast camera sometimes you get interesting pictures. Here I am shaking out two empties that came back by my shoulder.
