My sister goes to a private college in Florida and she is not allowed to have a gun on campus unless it is kept in the campus security office. Also she's not old enough for a CCW permit anyway.

I did a search on pepper spray here on THR and Fox Labs was one of the often recommended brands. They sell small pepper spray cans that double as a keychain: http://foxlabs.com/keys.htm

Do you think this would be a decent self defense tool for her? I think it's a pretty good idea, it's small and if it's attached to her keys she will most likely take it with her instead of leaving it in her room, and pepper spray seems to be effective most of the time in self defense situations from the research I've done on it. Obviously nothing works 100% of the time, and I'd rather get her a J frame .38, but unfortunately that isn't an option right now.

Also does anyone know the legalities concerning carrying pepper spray in Florida?

If it's the University of Miami or Nova - it's a no go. I did a search at one point of most florida to find out what schools would let you carry pepper spray as stun guns are only state schools and firearms are not allowed all around. None from what I found.

If you PM me the school I might have a better idea.

As for carrying pepper spray - the legalities are as follows.

No permit necessary up to 2 ounces. Can be open carried.

allowed most places, including ironically bars IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CWP even though if you have a CWP you can't carry pepper spray into a bar (weird huh?). That was last time I looked. I'm not an attorney. Nothing I say is legal advice.

i bought a Sabre Red keychain model for my wife since she doesnt want a gun. I at least feel that she isnt defenseless and has a weapon thats capable of stopping an attack readily at her disposal when shes out and about.

pepper spray hurts!

Very recently my friends and I thought it would be a good experience to be sprayed in the face with pepper spray. I'd had a cop friend of mine spray me years ago but apparently I'd forgotten just how painful it was. We were sprayed with our eyes closed. After about 10 seconds we tried to open our eyes. It was at this point when I suddenly remembered the intensity of the facial burning and the eye irritation, and that I couldn't just wash it off and make it all stop. No, my friends and I were in it for the long haul. It was hard to breath. The intensity of the burning did not even begin to subside for approximately 15 minutes, even though we each had a gallon of milk with which to wash. Keep in mind that I was not even sprayed in my eyes and that it was merely the fumes that forced my eyelids into an involuntary lockdown.

I have heard stories of pepper spray being ineffective, but after my experiences I find it difficult to believe people who claim that it "doesn't work" on them. I would have to see it.

^ i agree, i have been in the close vicinity in an enclosed room when pepper spray has been discharged in the air and have felt its respiratory and blinding effects, and i dont even think it was one of the nastier formulas.

i also watched a DVD of my best friends police academy video where they got pepper sprayed and tasered. Hilarious, but you can definitely see that the pepper spray works and works quick. My friend says he would MUCH rather be tasered 5 times than pepper sprayed once.

i cant really believe someone catching a blast in the face and not being effected.
