I was just walking back from physics lab and heard a bunch of sirens. They stopped so whatever is going on must be over, but we don't have any information yet.

EDIT:I think I spoke too soon, a whole convoy of police vehicles just raced down Washington street.

Go to www.vt.edu

They're using their website to alert personnel and students to stay away, etc. This is a good, smart example of how to get an alert out. It's a sad circumstance, but they seem to be all over the situation.

Drug related

My bet is on something Drug related. Supposed 1st incident at 7:15 AM. Only a tweaker would be up that early. There's been some interesting characters moving into Blacksburg over the last few years.

I just got one of those "breaking news alert" e-mails from CNN....

One dead, one wounded in Blacksburg (VA Tech?)

No other details yet.

Report: 1 Person Dead; Gunman on the Loose at Virginia Tech University
Monday, April 16, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. — A gunman was loose on the Virginia Tech University campus in Blacksburg, Va., Monday, and officials were warning everyone to stay away from all building windows.

A state government official told The Associated Press said that at least one person was killed and another was injured in a shooting incident at the West Ambler Johnston residence hall early Monday morning. FOX News has not yet confirmed that report.

Police are on the scene and are investigating. All classes have been canceled, according to the campus newspaper, The Collegiate Times.

The university community is urged to be cautious. Anyone who observes anything suspicious or has information about this case is encouraged to contact the Virginia Tech Police at (540) 231-6411.

"There are police driving throughout the neighborhoods with a loudspeaker saying, 'this is an emergency, everyone stay inside, we're looking for suspicious activity," Brittany Sammon, a senior Virginia Tech student staying at an apartment off campus, told FOX News on Monday. "There's no one outside at all, there's no traffic, there's nothing … everyone's doing what they said."

Sammon, who has a brother and roommate confined to their buildings on campus, said she first got the e-mail from the school regarding the shooting at 9:30 a.m. Monday. "It was just very short and brief and kind of scary, because it didn't have any details at all in it," she said. "It's definitely nerve wracking."

Local FOX affiliate WFXR-TV in Richmond reported that students are being held in their classrooms. It's unknown how many may have been injured in the earlier shooting.

The West Ambler Johnston dorm, commonly known on campus as West AJ, houses about 895 students and is located near West End Market and Dietrick Dining Center.

Virginia Tech has the largest full-time student population in Virginia, with more than 25,000 students. It consists of eight colleges and graduate school and offers 60 bachelor's degree programs and 140 master's and doctoral degree programs. The main campus includes more than 100 buildings located on 2,600 acres, and includes an airport.

This is a developing story. Please refresh your page for updates.

"Supposed 1st incident at 7:15 AM. Only a tweaker would be up that early."

Oh come on, even I used to go to a few 8 a.m. classes. Lived on that side of AJ for a year, but on the top floor.

Still up

They might have closed it to outside traffic so it doesn't get hammered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

but you don't get up at 7:15 for an 8 am class. 7:50 maybe."
______________________

I liked to eat breakfast and have time enough to clean up so I wasn't the stinkiest one in the classroom. Geeze, I'm 56 and get up at 6 or 6:30 on my days off. Quit being a slacker - life is passing you by. ;)

Initial reports

Initial reports are
1 dead
7-8 shot.

Also, the reports keep referring to the William Morva incident as having occurred at Virginia Tech. That didn't happen on campus. They closed campus down, but I don't think Morva was ever on campus.

JohnBT, I am 10:30 am person. Can't shake that no matter what I do. Somehow it is naturally when I wake up. Go figure.

I hope this is in error.

We don't need better gun control, we need better preemptive efforts. When someone is in trouble, others close to them (work, academic and family) need collectively to intervene before they get in "trouble" for life, i.e. prison!

If this is accurate, there had to have been warning signs...where was the intervention?

They are reporting that 17 people were transported to hospitals. At least 2 shooters involved.

Student on Fox News is stating, "...it was some Asian kid wearing a vest covered with magazines and he just kept reloading and shooting everything, doors, windows..."

Fox News Reporter: "What was he using, a rifle, a shotguns?"

Student: "He was using a handgun he unloaded a couple of clips trying to open the door, then he moved on."

But, the hospital reports shotgun wounds.

Now I hear they are saying 1 killed and 20 wounded...This could end up really bad with the upcoming HR1022, especialy since they are most likely using semi-auto's. I just don't understand how this is happening though because aren't firearms banned on college campuses?
