So I'm drooling over a FA 83 7-1/2" Premier Grade gun that was part of a special run of 500, this is gun #373 or thereabouts of that run. While it is used, there is zero evidence it has been fired, I can't find even a scratch on it. The LGS will sell it to me without the Leupold scope but with the matching stainless scope mount and rings for $1845. It has the gorgeous ebony Micarta black grips. The single action trigger cannot be described without slobber and flubber, it's that good.

What say the experts?

You might find one cheaper, but it takes time and a lot of looking. That's pretty close to a new price. I've never paid over 1200 for a FA.

The more common the model, the better a chance of finding one at a decent price.

On the otherhand, if it's a Premier, and your sure it's pretty much never fired, and you want the rings, it's a better price then new, and you won't have to wait.

Your call.

I can't really think of another gun maker that makes a .41 and is close in quality to an FA.

For perspective: You are getting the absolute, bar none, best revolver on the market for the price some people pay for 1911's from factories.

You also might consider if a 97 might be a bit better for a .41 then the 83.

Today's list price for a Model 83 Premier Grade, 7 1/2" barrel is $2370.00. I don't know how you can beat the price of $1845.00 that you were quoted, that is more than $500.00 below list.

Also, what fastest45ever said, they are hands down the finest made revolvers in the world, bar none.

I have a Model 83 Premier Grade, 7 1/2" barrel in .454 Casull and I absolutely love it. Here is the 25 yard five shot test card they included with my revolver:

Also, the Model 83 has a lifetime warranty, other models only one year (although only to the original owner).

FA M83 is perhaps the epitome of 41 mag revolvers. That is one heck of a 41 mag revolver if you can afford it.

Thanks all. I'm on the fence mostly because I'm not 100% sure of the caliber. It's not like Rugers where I can go buy all the relevant calibers for less than the price of the FA. I think its a good deal but I know the gun has been there a while owing to the price probably. Plus, it has a Leupold scope on it which adds another $350 to the price and that's what is on the tag. I'm probably the first person to ask if he'd sell it without the scope. I need to make up my mind if I want to go fight for this one.

He has a couple field grade ones there for $1100 each too, one in 454 casul, the other in .44 mag.

I'd probably go for the .454.

But that's prejudice. I'm getting rid of my Model 57 and getting a .454 BFR, fair disclosure. Having more than 500 rounds of hot factory .45 Colt does play into my decision. ;)

I love my FA 83 Premier in .454. In fact it just got back from the factory where they performed an action job, installed an over travel screw, and fitted a spare cylinder in .45ACP. I had also considered having a different barrel put on (mostly since it was there and I wanted to change the cosmetics), but the gunsmith (John) talked me out of it since the current barrel shoots so well. His advice was to not fix something that was clearly not broken.

At that price for a used Premier grade, I'd say they are about $100.00 high in a perfect world where you can find used FA 83's in .41 Magnum..... but you can't so pay them the money if you can afford it and be a happy FA owner. Hopefully they still have the adjustable rear iron sights somewhere in a box too right?

I would pass. The avant grande und glorious 83 is best served with .454 or .500 hole. I would not consider .41 magnum even on 97 frame. That caliber is next to worthless being neither here nor there. The best deal I have ever seen on FA was $900 for #1001 .454 with 7.5" barrel and that was few years ago when some people actually had enough in their wallet to buy one.
