Is anyone having FTF issues with the Savage Axis? I have one in 308 win, and after 15 to 20 shots, in one session, I start having FTF. This happens with factory ammo and handloads. Some will fire after a double hit, some won't. I did have two failed primers in the handloads, but what happened in factory ammo? To try and remedy this, I have torn the bolt down and cleaned everything and put in a new firing pin spring set. Neither of these have helped.

The dimple in primers doesn't seem to be as deep as other guns I own. The travel on the pin itself is not adjustable. The spring set consists of two springs and a washer. It has a regular coil spring, a cocking pin retainer spring, and an "alignment" washer/spacer that goes between the two springs.

New gun or used? If new I'd call Savage and see about sending it back for repair. If used, still call Savage and see if repairs are covered. I can see hic-cups on reloads but factory ammo? Is the firing pin protrusion enough, is it the original bolt, can you check headspace? Maybe just shoot 10 shots in a session? :( Good Luck!

New gun. Original bolt. Firing pin doesn't dimple very deep. Reloads have slight resistance when closing bolt. (All are full length sized.) The one reload that didn't fire had a dead primer. The other couple reloads that fired on the second strike appeared to have primers seated properly. Also I can't shoot military rounds. (The bolt is not easy to close on them, and they stick in the chamber after firing.)

Id contact savage and see what they say. I'm pretty sure youll be out of a gun for a week or two but they will fix it and have it back to you post haste.

Remove the bolt, uncock the firing pin then measure how far it sticks out past the bolt face. Minimum is .055", maximum .065".

Most large rifle primers need dented at least .025" to fire.

What's the case headspace on those rounds that didn't fire whose primers were slightly dented?

I've already torn down the FTF from the reloads, and it's mixed in with other empty brass. The factory ammo ftfs were just disposed of. (Factory are from before I started reloading)

Seen a 6.5 creedmoor with a short chamber, the factory ammo jammed into the rifling. Savage adjusted it.

Are there marks on the bullet after the rounds are ejected? May be a clue.

Hard ejection after firing, that may be high pressure from a short freebore or leade/throat??

I didn't see any marks on the bullet. I seat 180gr game kings at 2.805, and there's no marks on those either. The mil rounds were 147gr and 150gr fmj, the bullets in those looked shorter than the 180s.
