Folks, am I missing the point of the 20SF vs the G20?

As I see it, there is little difference between the 2... (took the table below from Glock's website). Seriously, what's the point?

G20 SF G20 Difference (%)
LENGTH 204 209 2.39%
HEIGHT 139 139 0.00%
WIDTH 32.5 32.5 0.00%
BARREL HEIGHT 32 32 0.00%
BETWEEN SIGHTS 172 172 0.00%
BARREL LENGTH 117 117 0.00%
WEIGHT (Unloaded) 870 875 0.57%
WEIGHT (Loaded) 1120 1125 0.44%
TRIGGER PULL 2.5 2.5 0.00%
TRIGGER TRAVEL 12.5 12.5 0.00%
LENGTH OF TWIST 250 250 0.00%
MAGAZINE CAPACITY 15 15 0.00%

Have you actually held the two side by side? Amazing how that couple of mm difference sounds insignificant but feels so different. I felt the same way until holding both. Had my gen 2 20 grip completely redone, maybe I should have just got an SF.

Yes, if you've actually held them side by side, there is a big difference.

It's actually kind of like all the specs on Glocks, especially vs other guns. Numbers can be deceiving.

Somebody, will say my XX pistol is so much slimmer than a Glock model GXX, and folks will immediately chime in that the GXX is only .010 thicker, or is actually .18 thinner than the XX. The numbers often don't tell the story of how the gun feels in your hand or what is making one gun "technically" larger than another.

For what it is worth, I think the standard Gen 4 grip with no added backstrap is the same as a Gen 3 SF.

The main difference between G whatever and G whatever SF is the distance around the grip, a number that Glock does not put in their spec sheet on the website. I do give Glock props for keeping up and putting all sorts of measurements on their website, but the SF and standard grip frame measurements would be even better. For some, that little number will make the difference in how much they enjoy their purchase.

I have older versions of the G-20 and G-21 made prior to the SF option. They work for me, but I can see where others with small hands would not be able to use them. I've picked up the SF versions. Even with my larger hands I'd opt for the SF if buying new today. The difference is noticeable when you hold the gun.

The difference is only 3mm front strap to back strap but to me they felt very different. I bought a G20SF to go along with my G29SF. I had a G30 that felt fat compared to the SF models. I have very average hands.

Try before making a commitment IMO

I'll repeat, if you get a Gen 4, you can have both. The Gen 4 regular grip IS an SF. If it feels weird, just install one of the interchangeable back straps, one of which matches the standard G3 grip. My recent purchase G19 even came with several beaver tail back straps if that is your cup of tea.

Yes the SF models are thinner in the very end of the grip, basically it doesn't flare out as much as the reg gen3 models. The gen4 20/21/29/30 is the same size grip as the SF models, just with a different texture. I notice it more on the 20/21 models than the 29/30, but it's an improvement nonetheless.

And although it wasn't asked, the Gen4 9/357/40 frames are thinner (plain, without any backstraps) than the reg gen3 models, almost like an "SF" version of those as well.

You can tell the difference if you hold them. The SF applies to Gen 3 only. The Gen 4 has interchangeable backstraps

For what it is worth, I think the standard Gen 4 grip with no added backstrap is the same as a Gen 3 SF.
This is right; I have the Gen4 G21, and the standard Gen 4 grip without a backstrap is the same as a Gen 3 SF.

What's the point??? My seems wife sooms to think the 30sf is a lot better then a 30. They do feel different

Many owners/users of the large grip frame of the G20/21 find they benefit from the small change of dimension offered by the SF frame. It's small, granted, but it's just enough to make a lot of difference to folks who find the standard Gen3 & older frames a bit too long for a comfortable and controllable "reach" (web of the hand to trigger).

Which is also reportedly why Glock adopted the "SF" frame dimension as the "standard" frame of the Gen4 guns (in applicable models), and offered increasingly larger backstrap inserts to make the grip frame as large as the Gen3 and older guns, as well as even larger.

I will repeat what others have said.
When you hold them, you can feel the difference. I have small hands so it is apparent to me. In fact, even the SF is too large for me.
Am I understanding correctly that the Gen4 model is even smaller? If so, maybe I need to try that. I really like the idea of the 10mm round and would like to play with one. I was looking at EAA Witnesses the other day on Gunbroker, but would rather have a Glock.

I believe that you can get used to any setup that you practice with enough to start seeing an improvement. I didn't like the idea of a Gen4 modular backstrap until I found out for myself that I can shoot my Gen4 G22 better with the fat backstrap on it, even though it felt strange in my hand until I got used to it. Might be worth it to try the Gen4 version of the 20.
