Merchant Turns Tables on Gunman
Store Owner Says He Had Been Victimized in the Past

POSTED: 11:01 am EDT September 20, 2005
UPDATED: 1:02 pm EDT September 20, 2005

JONESBORO -- A robbery suspect was recovering Tuesday afternoon at a Clayton County hospital after he was shot by a store merchant during a botched hold-up attempt, police said.

Keston Scott, 22, was rushed to Southern Regional Medical Center for treatment after he sought help there for a gunshot wound. Tracye Bryant, a hospital spokeswoman, said the man's wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said they planned to charge him with armed robbery and aggravated assault in connection with the incident, which occurred shortly after 9 a.m.

John Butts, the owner of John's Discount Store, which is located in the 200 block of North Main Street, said he shot the man with his .357 magnum gun after the suspect walked into his store with a gun and demanded money.

"He tried to shoot me first but I pulled my gun and shot him," said Butts, adding that he fired three times at the suspect. "You have to work if you need money, just like me. I work 16 and 17 hours every day seven days."

Butts said after he shot the suspect the man ran out of the store and crawled into a white car, which sped away.

A short time later, a man suffering from gunshot wounds sought medical help at Southern Regional Medical Center.

It was not immediately clear if any customers were in the store at the time of the shooting, which was captured by surveillance cameras posted inside the building.

Police said the owner of the store has not been charged, although the assailant captured on the surveillance tape apparently matches the identity of the man who sought help at the hospital.

"I don't encourage anyone to confront a would-be robber," said police Sgt. Wayne Woods. "The safest thing normally is to comply with their wishes because we don't want anyone hurt."

Butts said his store has been robbed at least two times in the past. He said he would pull out his gun again if he has to.

"If you do it one time I don't think they will bother you again," he said.

why say although?

And why was he rushed to the hospital when he was already there looking for help.

Another high point in the annals of journalism...

It's fine with me if the robber gets hurt, but I'd prefer that he get killed.

agreed. Now the poor guy defending himself probably will face a law suit. Sad thing is he will probably lose....what a shame.

The title of this thread should be . . . "Robbery Gone GOOD" (bearing in mind the number of times a victim is crippled or killed by some vicious creep and the police lament the "robbery gone bad")

:neener:

I am so damned sick of hearing police say this. Just shut up.

Tell that to all the murdered people in the super doom NO after the hurricane, they complied and are dead as door nails. What about the 9-11 incident, if your a risk to die anyways you might as well go for it. Fight till ya win or die...
I don't understand some people logc, espically in a crowd, there is a few of them and hundreds of you(meaning a crowd) we are being conditioned, like cattle.

At least they didn't call him the "shooting victim."

Not necessarily on either point. In any event, he could counterclaim for intentional infliction of extreme emotional distress.

Fight till ya win or die...

Amen!

we are being conditioned, like cattle.

That is exactly correct. This is to breed dependence upon approved officials,
not for our safety. This gives a greater amount of control over the populace
and reduces the questioning of authority.

More sinister is the point that if these depended upon officials come to take
your neighbor or you gun "it must be ok, its for my own good, they will/are
protecting me". :banghead:

Not saying it's gunna happen.... but it might. :scrutiny:

I don't believe there'll be a lawsuit. If there is a lawsuit, the plaintiff will lose, unless the plaintiff is the merchant who did the shooting. Now that's an idea. The merchant should sue the damned robber!

Maybe the merchant should send the robber's family a bill for the spent shells and damaged area in his store?

I have no sympathy for thiefs, looters, rapists, or child molesters. Shoot 'em all and save the Gov. money...

Not only is that a stupid thing to say, it's also dead wrong. Resisting violent crime with a firearm offers the LEAST chance of injury to the crime victim.

On the other hand, resisting with means other than a firearm is not nearly as effective and can make the crime victim more likely to be injured than if he didn't resist at all.

I am in this store every day. John is a good guy.

Jane, lawsuit? This is Jonesboro. We dont tolerate robbers and other assorted asshats here. :D

I'm thinking that violent criminals (like the BTK) absolutely love cops like Sgt Wayne Woods.

Congratulations to the merchant for defending himself. Shame it wasn't a kill.
I like to read these threads that show that there are still people out there who are not afraid to stand up for themselves. As far as the police and media telling us to "Just comply" I think it would depend on the situation. That may have worked a few years ago when crimes seemed a little less violent, but now there are too many stories as to where the victims complied and still got slaughtered like sheep. In my opinion, I would think it would be better to fight back with everything you had.

I have seen it all to much a robber is foiled by some guys defending himself and he doesn't kill the b$%!*$ off and then he finds himself in a dame cort getting ramrodded with no lube! SUX!

I have also seen this the robber gets what he deserves and dies and the family sues and wins...WHAT IS WROG WITH THE COURT SYSTEM????? :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

We need to take back our rights and our nation!

5 years ago, I understood this line of thinking, and in certain situations I even agreed with it. One's life is certainly not worth the contents of a convenient store cash register drawer. But September 11, 2001 changed all that. I remember the day of it hearing my most leftist and pacifist of aquaintances saying that "Just Complying" was no longer an option.

How anyone can still believe that this is a good idea in a post-9/11 world is simply beyond me.
