I just took delivery of a Schuster adjustable gas plug. I figured it was a $35 insurance policy so that I would be able to continue to shoot my Garands with fewer ammo concerns. Do any of you use one when you shoot Garand safe ammo like the Greek from the CMP? Are there advantages to doing so?

No need to use it with M2ball ammo.
You will need to readjust it everytime you shoot a different brand or load of ammo

Actually I believe there is an advantage to using it with any ammo. Slow down the cycle rate for less wear and tear plus it throws your brass into a nice little pile. Also by adjusting it you can tune your rifle to shoot better groups with it. Greek ammo can be hot so I say use it FTW!

Advantage ? Maybe, . Need to with M2ball, no. Properly tuned Garand will always throw brass in a pile

I realize that there's no need to use it with Greek ammo. That's the beauty of it, it can be all the way closed and no harm is done. But, if a setting can be found that will reduce wear that would be a good thing. I've also seen some references to maximizing (minimizing, actually) group size by varying the setting.

I use it with all ammo. I'll set the plug to the lowest setting that reliably cycles whatever ammo is being used. I figure it will only make things last longer set that way so I might as well run it with ball ammo as well. It probably doesn't change anything but its in there and is easy to adjust.

I notice Midway carries two versions of the Schuster gas plug (with different number of gas ports, as I recall). Is there any functional difference between them?

When you use them, are the settings repeatable? That is, if I have already determined what is appropriate for a certain type of ammo, and I switch to a new ammo and figure out what is best for that, can I then go back to a known setting to the old ammo without "sighting" it in again?

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with them as far as tightening up groups goes?

Tim, while I haven't used the plug yet, I do know that the plug is adjusted by very definite and stiff clicks. I'm thinking that if one were to keep track of the number of clicks closed from fully upen one could use that for a setting. If that isn't the case, or practical, I might be looking at a plug for each of my Garands.
