Gas prices v. guns...how to cope?

You forget to mention BEER. That crap is up also. My Killians Red is up to $30 from $24. Cut back on drinking, driving & shooting? What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is going on?

I just bought a Ruger Mark III Hunter to go with my 10/22 so I can shoot cheaper ammo. I won't stop buying gas or ammo when it is needed.

I started reloading. And I'm buying fewer guns, but that has a lot more to do with the fact that I'm running out of things I want to buy than the price of gas.

And when oil was $9 a barrel, and a million of my colleagues lost their jobs, and no one gave a crap because they were just non-union oilfield hands........I swore I would never complain about gas prices again. And I don't.

I ride my bicycle to the range! It's about 30 miles round trip but a nice run. I pack my stuff on a BOB trailer these days, but I've tried other methods with other bikes. Combines a good workout with shooting, and I spend ZERO on gas. What's not to like?

Los Anchorage, AK (yes I do it in the winter too)

Things are more expensive? I hadn't noticed.

I'd been living on half my salary for a number of years and then doubled my income last year.

I know, I'm just a troublemaker.

John

Edited to add: To get better gas mileage, I had to sell my '02 Forester that got 24 mpg because my parents moved to a nursing home and my father gave me his '06 Avalon that gets between 27 and 30 mpg driving over the limit on the Interstate. Hate me, I can cope. ;) 165 hp vs. 268 hp. How does Toyota do it?

I live about two-three miles from my range, but havent been out to it in months. I went out probably in December and burned through a whole brick of .22lr and rented a glock with 50 9mm last time I went. So, at least I got a good amount in last time I was free to do so. Unfortunately, work and school is killing me at the moment to the point where I cant even find time to get my car inspected and my license renewed before my upcoming birthday. Then a court summons for a ticket, family issues with a soon-to-ass grandmother...gah. Stress stress stress.

Uh ...

GETTING CHASED BY A FREAKIN' GRIZZLY BEAR?!

:what:

I just hope you can outrun them!

Right. I can just see you pedaling like a madman in the chill twilight. You'll be trying to decide between running the headlight, and seeing, or powering your Dr. Emmett Brown-"Back to the Future" grizzly fryer gizmo thing that you have trailing off the back of the bike and into the gloom, just praying that some bear is going to eat it and not you.

It's a sort of Pee Wee Herman meets Dan Hagerty with just enough Terminator v.1 thrown in vision, you know? Maybe better swap that last one out for some Lance Armstrong?

10 mpg 93 oct. I only drive it downhill in neutral

Fuel and ammo prices have had some impact on my own shooting. Regular gas is ~$3.15, with the range 30 miles away, and ammo is a good 25% higher than this time last year. Even this would not have had the impact it has, but I work on piecework and am not getting enough pieces of work, so my cash flow is down, too. Instead of visiting the ranges three or four times a month, I'm down to one or two.

I'm getting into reloading now. I've gotten to the point where I equate EVERY purchase with ammo. No more little luxuries. I get sick when I think of people spending $4 for a cup of coffee:what:. After all, that $4 equals roughly 15 rounds of .223!

Yeah I know it's sad but you'd be shocked how much money you save when you pass up little things like that.

Eh. I don't believe in worrying about recessions and such. I squirrel money away, and if I can afford something, then I'll buy it. Diversify funds.

Ignorant? perhaps. Naive? perhaps. but it works for me.

I shoot my Ruger 22/45 quite a bit these days and I'm fortunate enough to have A) a large stash of 40 S&W reloads that I loaded last year for cheap and B) a nice neighbor with an 85 acre spread and an open invitation to shoot on it, only 2 miles from my house.:D
