I recently purchased an east german 26.5mm milsurp geco flare gun for sailing and have been wondering what other modifications or tweaks I can do to it. If anyone knows any of the history behind it that would be great too.

Don't know of any mods or tweaks you can do to a flare gun!
They are what they are, and there ain't much you can do about it!

I'd get some 26.5mm flares, and test the gun & flares to see if they work 100%.

Then clean & oil the crap out of it, and seal it & some flares in a heavy duty vac-sealed plastic bag or waterproof box for long-term boat storage.

There are adapter inserts for the 26.5mm flare guns that allow you to shoot .22 rimfire and others that allow you to shoot 12 gauge flares (not shotshells).

Bought some blue smoke flares from a buddy and tested them out at a park near the range, very entertaining to say the least. I'll definitely test out some more com bloc flares before i take it out on the lake, but definitely consider the 12 and 22 adapters. thanks :) just out of curiosity, there aren't any other types of flares you guys would recommend?
